Amal Lenart, president of the SHEF, said this is the first year that SHEF is leading the event. In the past, it was a non-profit activity, facilitated by SHD161.

SHEF is looking to raise funds to purchase physical education equipment for the district's six schools. The cost of the event is $10 for adults and $5 for K-12 students. Register online at Summit Hill District 161. So far, 300 have registered, she said.

"The whole idea of the fun run is to promote health and fitness," said Lenart. The event coincides with National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, which is promoted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The SHD161 event was established to integrate with the PE curriculum, encouraging students, teachers, parents and the community to stay active and celebrate their achievements. After the run/walk, all participants are invited to participate in fun family and individual activities planned by the PE teachers, added Lenart.

Along with the School Community Organizations from each of the schools, numerous businesses and service organizations in the Lincoln-Way communities have joined in as sponsors. The chambers of commerce in Frankfort and Mokena are sponsoring the run/walk too, she added.
