Frankfort Park District Marks the Summer Solstice with 5K Run

Enjoy the summer solstice, June 19, at Frankfort Park District's 13 annual Short Run on a Long Day race at Main Park.

The Frankfort Park District marks the first day of summer with a summer solstice 5K run.

June 19 is the longest day of 2013. The sun rises at 5:16  a.m. and sets at 8:29 p.m. To be exact, according to timeanddate.com, the longest day for this region lasts 15 hours, 13 minutes and 43 seconds.

Frankfort Park District has selected this date every year for the past 13 years as a way to welcome the summer season. The 13th Annual Short Run on a Long Day steps off at 7 p.m. at Main Park, 200 S. Locust St.

"The course is a 5k/3.1 mile U.S. Track & Field Certified route that takes you through the beautifully scenic Old Plank Trail and through the streets of Historic Frankfort," said Deborah Gorchos, spokesperson.

Runners will be given a chip with all their pertinent information—age and gender. Chip timing provides park district officials with accurate information about who is crossing the finish line and documenting precisely the time the line was crossed.

Water will be available on the course. After the completion of the race. Gorchos invites participants and fans to stay for the awards presentation, music, healthy snacks, pizza (for runners only), and much more.

On-site registration is between 6-6:45 p.m. The registration fee is $19 through June 17 and $25 till the time of the race.
