Jail Making it Tough For Lawyer on Murder-For-Hire Rap to Move Case

A reduced visitation schedule at the county jail has slowed things down for the attorneys representing a Frankfort lawyer charged with trying to put a hit on his wife.

A reduction in visiting hours at the Will County jail has slowed things down for the attorneys representing a Frankfort lawyer charged with trying to put a hit on his wife. "It's a little hard to get in there right now," attorney Steve Whitmore told Judge Daniel Rozak during a Wednesday morning hearing. Whitmore said he needs to interview witnesses locked up in the jail in order to prepare for the defense of Robert Gold-Smith, a 50-year-old lawyer charged with asking a fellow inmate at the county jail to kill his wife. According to court papers, Gold-Smith discussed paying for the murder of his wife with at least five inmates during his time in the county jail. Gold-Smith ended up in jail with the men he allegedly talked to about killing …

Snitch in Jailhouse Hit Man Case Popped on Domestic Battery Rap

The man who wore a wire and allegedly recorded a jailed Frankfort lawyer trying to hire a hit man to kill his wife was arrested in Crest Hill.

The star witness in the case against a Frankfort lawyer charged with trying to hire a hit man to kill his wife was arrested for allegedly hitting a woman. The witness, Brian McDaniel, who allegedly wore a wire to catch attorney Robert Gold-Smith's murderous plans, was booked into the Will County jail on a domestic battery charge Wednesday night. It was in that very same jail that McDaniel, 49, and Gold-Smith, 50, first met. After making Gold-Smith's acquaintance, McDaniel voluntarily wore a wire for detectives with the sheriff's department, sources said, and recorded his fellow-inmate attempting to set up his wife's murder. Gold-Smith was in jail for allegedly attacking and brutally beating his wife in a courthouse hallway in November 2010…

Frankfort Lawyer on Murder-For-Hire Rap Gets Some Attorney-Hire Money

The Frankfort lawyer charged with trying to hire a hitman to kill his wife got back a cool $2,500 so he can hire a lawyer.

A Will County judge is giving back the bond money he revoked from a Frankfort lawyer so he can hire an attorney to defend him against charges he tried to hire a hitman to kill his wife. The Frankfort lawyer, 50-year-old Robert Gold-Smith, had been out on bond after allegedly attacking his wife outside a Will County courtroom following a November 2010 divorce hearing. Gold-Smith allegedly beat his wife in a courthouse hallway in front of numerous witnesses. According to a psychiatrist's report, Gold-Smith said he "blacked out" during the attack. "I do not remember," he is quoted as saying in the report. "I was on a cloud watching everything; it seems so surreal. It seems as if I was in a dream. From the records it indicated that I hit her. …

Frankfort Lawyer's Murder Solicitation Case Waiting on Tales of Tapes

The case against a Frankfort lawyer charged with trying to put a hit on his estranged wife has been postponed while audio recordings are provided to his attorneys.

The attorneys representing a Frankfort lawyer charged with trying to hire a hitman to take care of his estranged wife have yet to receive the audio recordings of his allegedly brokering the death deal. The recordings are to be made available before 50-year-old Robert Gold-Smith next appears in court on Jan. 15. Gold-Smith was brought from the county jail for a brief Tuesday morning hearing on both the murder solicitation case and for an earlier alleged attack on his wife. Gold-Smith's other case dates back to November 2010. Gold-Smith and his wife, Victoria Smith, 45, were leaving a divorce hearing when he suddenly unleashed a vicious beating on her in a courthouse hallway, according to police and prosecutors. Gold-Smith was released on $2…

Frankfort Lawyer Charged With Trying to Put Hit on Wife

A Frankfort lawyer locked up in the county jail allegedly offered to pay as many as four inmates to kill his wife.

A Frankfort lawyer jailed for allegedly unleashing a brutal beating on his wife in a courthouse hallway was charged with offering to pay at least four fellow inmates thousands of dollars to kill the woman. It was unclear where attorney Robert Gold-Smith, 50, planned to get the money to pay for his wife's murder, as he told Judge Marzell Richardson he is broke, homeless and unable to pay for an attorney. Judge Richardson assigned a public defender to Gold-Smith's case during a brief hearing Tuesday afternoon. Gold-Smith will be back in court Oct. 17—both for the murder-for-hire case and the shocking allegations of viciously beating his wife, Victoria Smith, 45, outside a Joliet courtroom as they left a divorce hearing in November 2010. Gold…
