Frankfort VFW Post 1493 executed a 21-gun salute on Veterans Day.
The members of Frankfort VFW Post 1493 honored America's veterans with a 21-gun salute on Sunday, Veterans Day, at the Frankfort Township Municipal Complex. "It's just a day to honor all the members of the military, past and present," said post commander and Marine Corps veteran Joseph Powers. The post holds two salutes each year, on Veterans Day and on Memorial Day. Powers also noted that the Frankfort VFW post is open to the public and that all veterans in the Frankfort area are welcome at the post. Seventh graders at Hickory Creek Middle School participated in a Veterans Day program on Nov. 9 at which they presented a check for $6,570.64 to veterans recognition organization Honor Flight Chicago, according to a media release from Frankfort School District 157-C. The funds donated by the students will sponsor a trip to Washington D.C. for 13 World War II veterans. The students raised the money by collecting coins and by selling Aurelio’s pizza, flags and Icees. Friday’s program included a color guard presentation by the Boy Scouts of America, several guest speakers, a patriotic song performed by students and a reenactment of America’s White Table, a children’s story by Margot Theis Raven presented by HCMS seventh grade staff members. …

The Hickory Creek Middle School band hosted a Veterans Day Concert on Nov. 7. A Veterans Day Observation was presented at 7 p.m., with Frankfort mayor Jim Holland overseeing the proceedings. The Tiger Band backed mayor Holland with classic patriotic songs, including The Star Spangled Banner, Battle Hymn Epic and American the Beautiful. Veterans from VFW Post 1493 continue their tradition of honoring those who have served in the military.
In front of the veterans memorial at the Frankfort Township Municipal Complex, members from the Frankfort VFW Post 1493 celebrated Veterans Day with a 21-gun salute Friday morning. It has become a tradition for these local veterans to honor those who have served in the military, then adjourning to Applebee's in Mokena for lunch. Wednesday's concert at Hickory Creek Middle School served two purposes: It was the school's annual Fall Band Showcase, as well as the school's and the village's opportunity to say thank you to local veterans for their service to the country. Hi Big Gun, I would have loved to have included photos from that portion of the concert in the gallery. However, I'm embarrassed to say that I mixed up the time that the event started with the time that the Veteran's Day Observation was scheduled to start, and didn't arrive until the last 20 minutes of the event.
