U.S. Postal Service to End Saturday Mail Delivery

The U.S. Postal Service will end Saturday mail delivery by Aug. 1.

The U.S. Postal Service Wednesday morning announced it will eliminate Saturday delivery of mail by Aug. 1. The current six-days-per-week mail delivery business model is “no longer sustainable,” according to the U.S. Postal Service. Continued economic struggles and the increasing use of the Internet for communications and bill paying by consumers are among the key factors that lead to the decision. Saturday is also the lightest mail day of the week. “We must change in order to remain an integral part of the American community for decades to come,” reads a message on the U.S. Postal Service website. Santa Will Reply to Letters from Children in the Lincoln-Way Area

Thanks to a very special U.S. Postal Service program, "Santa" will reply to children who mail him their Christmas wish lists this holiday season.

Every year, millions of children sit down to make a wish list for Santa, hoping he will make all of their Christmas dreams come true. But what if Santa actually wrote back? The United States Postal Service is now accepting "Letters From Santa," a program that allows parents and caregivers to play Santa by sending a letter signed by Saint Nick to a child. According to a postal service news release, "The 'Letters From Santa' program helps parents fulfill the dreams of their own children." What Do Cuts at the Post Office Mean to You?

Would you pay $22 to $60 just to mail a letter downtown? The problems at the postal service may not be what you think.

As the second-largest employer in the United States (after Walmart) and the largest employer of union employees, the United States Postal Service is, to put it lightly, important. As an affordable means for Americans to send and receive correspondence and packages, often next-day, the USPS is important. As one of few government agencies deemed important enough by our founding fathers to spell out in the Constitution our Congress's "power to lay and collect taxes" for our postal infrastructure, the USPS is important.  As the only delivery service required to provide coverage to all corners of the United States, regardless of how remote or sparsely populated, the USPS is important.
