The Frankfort Village Board of Trustees approved multiple items concerning local businesses at the Nov. 19 board meeting. A downtown retail grant was approved by the board to award $10,000 to local restaurant Smokey Barque. The grant funds will partially cover the cost of replacing the restaurant’s heating and air-conditioning system. The board also approved a special use ordinance for Frankfort Martial Arts and Family Fitness. The ordinance designates 752 Center Rd., the fitness center’s proposed location, as an indoor recreation space. Frankfort resident Jillian Turner will operate the martial arts studio. “We’re very happy to see Jillian coming to Frankfort,” said Trustee Mike Stevens. Owner Tommy Ridings hopes to make the restaurant a destination by organizing several events in the coming months.
Smokey Barque will host a murder mystery party on Saturday night. “We’re really going to try to have people try to just enjoy themselves,” said owner Tommy Ridings. The evening will include a four-course dinner and a mobster mystery play, entitled “Bullets in the Bathtub.” As guests arrive, actors with Jest Mysteries, the featured performance company, will distribute roles and assist partygoers as they become familiar with one another’s characters. The show will run from 7-9:30 p.m. The performance will be light and comedic. Audience interaction is encouraged but not required. For the first time ever, businesses are partnering with the District 157-C Education Foundation to help make their annual coin drive a success.
Every year, the students at Grand Prairie Elementary School, Chelsea Intermediate School and Hickory Creek Middle School compete to raise the most money for their schools in the District 157-C Education Foundation sponsored annual coin drive. This year, local businesses are participating in the drive as well, placing donation cans next to their registers so community members can readily give back. “Watching the community support us is a beautiful thing,” said Laurie Nicholson, a member of the Education Foundation and organizer of the coin drive.
