Lincoln-Way East football just keeps on rolling. The Griffins (12-0) won 40-10 over the No. 2 seed Edwardsville, continuing its dominant season. It was the Griffins' largest win of the playoffs this season, having previously won 47-22 against Plainfield Central and 24-14 over Providence Catholic. Next week, Lincoln-Way East will play its first game of the playoffs on the road. The Griffins travel to play Benet, which won Saturday on a last-second touchdown pass over Downers Grove North. Griffins quarterback earned a rest after leading his team to a 45-0 lead over Edwardsville in the opener.
Featuring a roster that graduated 27 seniors and went just 4-5 a season ago, Edwardsville fielded an inexperienced football team on Friday. The Tigers were susceptible to some mistakes because of that inexperience, turning the ball over three times in the first half. Giving the ball back to Lincoln-Way East quarterback Blake Winkler isn’t in the best interest of any football team, and the Tigers learned that the hard way as the Griffins cruised to a 45-14 victory in the season opener. Winkler completed 12 of 23 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with Jelani Yancy twice and also found David Mahl for a 7-yard touchdown. Winkler didn’t play in the second half. He didn’t need to, as he guided the Griffins to a 45-0 lead. …
