Store owner John Carroll says that nearby vacancies, poor seasonal sales and a village ordinance for resale stores passed in recent years are all factors that have reduced business.
Play It Again Sports of Frankfort will close its doors in approximately six weeks. “Business has just been poor,” said John Carroll, the store’s owner. Play it Again is located in Hickory Creek Marketplace on La Grange Road. Carroll said that the many vacancies at Hickory Creek have been bad for business. Both storefronts north of Play It Again are vacant. Neighboring restaurant Chicago Blu closed a few months ago. Raymond Levine, another occupant of Hickory Creek, closed two years ago and the retail space has remained empty ever since. Carroll also said that warm weather in recent years has led to a decrease in the sale of winter sporting goods, such as ice skates, hockey equipment and snow boards. “It’s been really tough to sell seasonal…

The board approves redrafted legislation that would require local resale shops to document certain sales.
For a second time, the Frankfort Village Board on Monday passed a preowned merchandise ordinance designed to crackdown on the sale of stolen goods to local pawn shops and resale stores. The new ordinance requires resale shops to follow these measures: This was the second time the ordinance has gone before the board. Originally passed Feb. 22, the new legislation raised the ire of some local shop owners who felt it was too restrictive and a burden on them. One merchant, John Carroll, franchise owner for Play It Again Sports, which resells used sporting goods, wrote a letter to village adminstrators, complaning about the restrictive measures. Village officials, including Mayor Jim Holland, took that note to heart and repealed the orginal …

Local businessman works with officials to draft a compromise, which will be discussed at Land Use and Policy Commission meeting tonight.
It's back to the drawing board for the Village of Frankfort and its proposed preowned merchandise ordinance. Members of the Land Use and Policy Committee will revisit the law during its meeting tonight. Last month, village officials reconsidered a newly passed ordinance that put new restrictions on the resale of items to secondhand stores. The move came after John Carroll, the franchise owner of used sporting goods store Play It Again Sports on LaGrange Road, wrote a letter to the mayor and Frankfort administrators upset over the hardship the ordinance would cause on his business. The original resale ordinance, which was passed by the Village Board as part of its unanimous consent agenda at its Feb. 22 meeting, created new requirements …

After a letter from a local business owner, village officials will revisit a new law that puts restrictions on local secondhand shops.
It's a rare feat to reverse the wheels of government once they've turned. However, thanks to a letter from a local business owner, village officials are reconsidering a newly passed ordinance that put new restrictions on the resale of items to secondhand stores. At its Feb. 22 meeting, the Village Board passed a law as part of its unanimous consent agenda that created new requirements for the sale and purchase of preowned merchandise. Under the ordinance, resale shops would need to keep detailed records and spreadsheets on the customers and items being sold to the store. Purchased goods could not be sold for 14 days, and stores could not buy items from customers younger than 18. John Carroll, the franchise owner of Play It Again Sports, a…

Has this been a problem? It sounds like the Village is trying to pass an ordinance to make it difficult for a pawn shop from opening in town and in the process is increasing the expenses to a couple of great existing stores. Will the Village need additional labor to process the pictures and paperwork created by this ordinance or do they have the time?   more ›
