Bike the Parks and Chow Down

Frankfort Park District prepares for park-to-park bike ride, progressive picnic dinner

The Frankfort Park District is gearing up for some outdoor food and fun with its first Bike the Parks event on August 5. "We were kind of brainstorming last summer about a new event that we could bring to Frankfort, something that would incorporate riding bikes," said Stacy Proper, park district superintendent of recreation. The event will kick off with salad at Indian Boundary Park and continue with a bike ride along the Old Plank Trail path to Main Park for the main part of the dinner. "We initially had thought of doing just an adult-only kind of bike ride, like a progressive dinner kind of thing for adults, where they would bike ride to different restaurants," Proper said. What Should the Village do With the Charrington Dam Property?

Frankfort officials laid out four plans for the 33 acres of land at a recent public forum.

At a public forum held Wednesday, Feb. 8, Mayor Jim Holland, village environmental specialist Nicole Specht and several other village officials heard from residents about what potentially to do with the Charrington Dam property, which is about 33 acres of mostly wetlands and prairie. Before a large crowd, Specht outlined four plans that could be implemented for the property: passive open space, active open space, a public park or leaving it alone. Specht said the village will do what the residents want with the space. Turning the area into a passive or active open space would mean removing all invasive species on the land and reintroducing about 75 natural species of plants. A passive open space would mean no one would be allowed on the …

Someone's Mom

1:23 pm on Monday, February 13, 2012

The homeowners in attendance received a special notification to attend this meeting delivered to their doors. (I saw the meeting notice in the newspaper.) As expected, this group of homeowners voiced their NIMBY opinions. They believe removing invasive species, adding a walking trail, fishing pier, and park benches would invite crime and destruction. (Didn't folks say the same thing when they …   more ›

Park District Holds Second Public Meeting to Get Residents' Insight

A public forum Wednesday will help the Frankfort Park District develop a village survey to find out how it should use its resources.

Miss last month's Frankfort Park District's forum to talk about how to improve the district? Here's your second chance. The park district will hold a public meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Founders Center. District officials want to hear residents' opinions on the park district and its recreation services. That information will help with the design of a village survey that will give the district ideas on how to use its resources.  Contact Frankfort Park District’s Executive Director Tom Carstens at 815-469-9400 for more information.
