Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.
Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. The Village of Frankfort honored and remembered veterans during the traditional Memorial Day ceremony held on Breidert Green on Monday, May 28. Though I was absent from Frankfort's Memorial Day ceremony, I did spend the day with extended family in Gibson City, Illinois where three of our veteran uncles are buried there in Drummer Township Cemetery. Also my mother, most all of her brothers and sisters and my Grandma and Grandpa. Honoring Freedom's Heros has long been a tradition in our family. For Freedom's sake, we yet persevere.   more ›

The half-size replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall spent its final day in New Lenox on Memorial Day.
It was a brief and somber goodbye to the Vietnam Moving Wall, which had been in New Lenox over the weekend. Lincoln-Way West students sang the Star Spangled Banner and The Mansions of the Lord, and there was a brief rifle salute and the playing of Taps. After just 20 minutes, the closing ceremony was completed but the crowd of hundreds was asked to stay as long as they wanted to pay tribute to the soldiers whose names are forever engraved on the wall. The half-size traveling replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., made its way to the "Home of Proud Americans" in New Lenox this weekend, and we caught up with some veterans, visitors and volunteers who came to see the moving monument. As the first black commander of the Illinois VFW 16th District, Walter Sanders says color doesn't matter. Getting the job done does.
Walter Sanders knows that when a veteran returns home from an overseas war, he or she just wants want to catch up on life. Events like getting married, buying a car, hanging out with friends may take precedence over joining military organizations like the VFW when a soldier gets back on home soil. "I know when I first came out of the service, the VFW and the American Legion and all those organizations were the last thing I was thinking about," said Sanders, a 66-year-old Vietnam vet who took over as commander last July of the Illinois VFW's 16th District, which encompasses the south suburbs. But Sanders also knows soldiers not only come home with physical scars, they return with wounds others cannot see. Problems with anger, trouble …
