Former high school teacher Ryan Gardner faces a felony in connection with threats against Lincoln-Way school officials.
A former Lincoln-Way Central High School teacher who checked himself into a Chicago hospital for psychiatric care faces a felony charge of telephone harassment in connection with alleged threats against school district officials. A warrant for the arrest of Ryan Gardner, 40, was secured late Tuesday afternoon. Gardner, who reportedly lives with his parents in downstate Danville, headed north and voluntarily checked himself into University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago, said Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow. Even though he is receiving psychiatric care, Gardner would have been able to leave the hospital of his own volition, Glasgow said. Michalak, who has served District 210 for decades, will begin her principal duties July 1.
The Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Sharon Michalak as the new principal of Lincoln-Way East High School at a board meeting on Dec. 13, according to a media release from the district. Michalak has served Lincoln-Way schools in several capacities throughout her career in education, including her current position as assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and staff development. Thursday’s decision regarding Michalak followed the announcement that District Superintendent Dr. Lawrence A. The district did not meet statewide standards in 2011-12, but Lincoln-Way Schools were still high-ranking among area districts.
Lincoln-Way School District 210 recently received its annual Illinois District Report Card. According to the report, the district is not meeting Adequate Yearly Progress statewide standards. However, neither is any other high school district in the state, according to Sun-Times Media. Adequate Yearly Progress is determined by student scores on the Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE), participation rates on state assessments and graduation rates. During the 2011-12 academic year, the number of Lincoln-Way students meeting or exceeding state standards dropped, from 72.1 percent in 2010-11 to 68.8 percent in 2011-12. Nominating petition forms for the April 9, 2013, school board election in Lincoln-Way High School District 210 are now available. Forms may be picked up in the office of Sue Fennell, recording secretary to the Board of Education at 1801 E. Lincoln Highway, New Lenox on any business day between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. A school board candidate's petition must be filed in the same office no earlier than 7 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 17 and no later than 5 p.m., Monday, Dec. 24.
