DUI-Related Accident Could Cost You More This New Year's Eve

A recent state law lets Frankfort recover costs from drivers when police officers investigate DUI accident scenes.

New Year's Eve--like St. Patrick's Day--has a reputation as being "amateur night" for drinkers, bringing out people who too easily imbibe to excess while celebrating.  Unfortunately, that can lead to too many people driving under the influence. Although the Frankfort Police Department won't be setting up any sobriety checkpoints New Year's Eve, officers will be out in force on village's roads. READ: New Year's Eve Events in Frankfort and Around the Area "We handle it like we do any other night. ... We  have extra officers and available that night," said Commander Kevin Keegan. "Obviously, we try to be proactive and prepare. It's different every year. That's just the nature of every day police work." One big difference this year is that a …

Joe Griffin: Frankfort Patch's Person of the Year

The cable coordinator for the village-run Channel 6 earned this year's distinction thanks to his reputation for pushing the station in new and creative directions.

Joe Griffin is as much a fixture of Frankfort, where he's lived all his life, as he is of FCTV (Channel 6), the village's cable-access station where he's worked since he was a high school volunteer beginning in the late '90s.  But his lasting presence in the village--or with Channel 6--isn't what made readers vote for Griffin as Frankfort Patch's Person of the Year for 2011. It's the fact that, as the cable coordinator for Channel 6, he's made a significant contribution to the community thanks to his innovative technical and creative work with the station.   "Over the years, I've seen him grow creatively, professionally and personally," said Mary Canino, Frankfort's community relations manager, who hired Griffin in his current role in 2004…

YEAR IN REVIEW: Top 10 Stories of 2011

Don't let anyone tell you Frankfort is a sleepy suburb. We look back at the past 12 months and pick the stories that shaped the community in 2011.

Say what you will about 2011 in Frankfort; it wasn't boring. This was the first full year Frankfort Patch covered the community, and while the village wasn't subjected to earthquakes, plague outbreaks or alien invasions, there was certainly enough going on to keep me busy. I went back through the archives (at my age, I don't trust my memory) and chose the 10 headlines, events and ongoing stories that provided the most impact--and in some cases, drama--in Frankfort. This school district could fill up the top five spots on its own, given everything that went on this year. Wire to wire, D161 had more unexpected twists and turns than the Viper at Great America, and it's not over yet. Let's run down what's happened so far: It doesn't look like …

YEAR IN REVIEW: Remembering Those Who Passed Away in 2011

This year our community experienced many tragic losses, including many young people taken from us too soon.

Reflecting on the past year doesn't only involve looking back at the events that shaped the community, but it also includes remembering the people who died this year.  Sadly, 2011 was marked with too much tragedy, taking some Frankfort residents and community members much, much too young. You've probably seen these names in some of our other Year in Review stories, but they're worth mentioning--and remembering--again. Julie Gorczynski, 17, of Frankfort died June 10, after she was in a car accident in Orland Park. Julie graduated from Lincoln-Way North High School the week before her death. She also worked at Marcus Theatres in Orland Park. Go to Julie's Memorial page to post remembrances, photos and videos. Patrick Juris, 22, of New Lenox…

YEAR IN REVIEW: Top Sports Stories of 2011

The year was marked with successes--as well as tragedy--for athletes and teams in Frankfort. What story do you think should be at the top of the list?

We went through the sports stories of the past year to select the headlines that people were talking about. These are the top five: The tragic death of this Lincoln-Way East High School freshman in September after being hit by a car during cross-country practice in Palos Township devastated the L-W community. Moments of silence were held at the football home games for L-W East and North, and in a very touching display, Patrick's cross-country teammates honored his memory by running as a group at their next meet. Family and friends filled St. Anthony's Catholic Church to say goodbye to the boy. The longtime soccer coach was abruptly let go by East in September. School officials cited wanting to go in a different direction as the reason for …

Chowdown Showdown

YEAR IN REVIEW: Who Served the Best Dishes in 2011?

We look back at our Chowdown Showdowns and look at what Lincoln-Way restaurants served the best burgers, fried chicken, stuffed pizza and more this year.

For the past year, the Patch sites for Frankfort, New Lenox and Mokena have held a Chowdown Showdown, pitting eateries in the Lincoln-Way area against one another over a singular dish. We're going to show you our "best of the best" tomorrow, but in the meantime, tell us about your favorite restaurants. You can comment below or, if you really want to help out the restaurants that have given you and your families great food and great times, review the restaurants in our Patch Places directory.

It's that time of the year when everyone's busy recapping what happened the previous year. Of course, they're also looking ahead and making resolutions for the new year. Well, guess what, loyal Frankfort Patch reader: That's exactly what I want you to do. But instead of doing it for yourself, I want you to do it for Frankfort. Should more people resolve to be shop in downtown Frankfort? Should the Illinois Department of Transportation resolve to finish the widening of U.S. Route 30 on schedule? Should the Summit Hill School District 161 board members resolve to get along better with one another?  You have until 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, to submit your resolutions for Frankfort in 2012 in the comments section of this article. I will pick the …
