The board voted 5-1 in favor of rezoning two adjacent parcels from residential to commercial to advance the project.
Despite several opposing comments and a history of contention over the Currie Motors Ford expansion plan, the Frankfort Village Board at the regular Monday meeting voted 5-1 in favor of rezoning two lots on 95th Avenue from residential to commercial use. The majority of the board favored the move to rezone property to accommodate the overall $2.5-plus million expansion. Anticipated sales tax revenue and the bump in property tax from the car dealership was the motivator. The renovation and expansion by Currie Motors was approved in August 2012. Complications for a plan that calls for the creation of a new vehicle storage lot along 95th Avenue bubbled to the top Plan Commission meetings in January and again in March. Trustee Cynthia Corso-…

The village board discussed the addition of two right turn lanes and a traffic light on Route 45 at Tuesday's meeting.
Frankfort residents can expect more construction on Route 45 with the opening of Mariano’s Fresh Market on March 5. The Frankfort Village Board of Trustees voted to purchase two small plots of land from Phillips Chevrolet in order to accommodate the addition of a turn lane on La Grange Road at a meeting Tuesday evening. “We’re very excited about Mariano’s opening up,” said Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland in an interview with Patch. The two plots of land total .023 acres and were purchased to allow for the relocation of a natural gas line easement and for right-of-way for the new turn lane. The lane will be located on southbound La Grange road and will facilitate right turns onto Lincoln Highway. Other upcoming construction projects related to …

The board will discuss in the coming months whether 2013 is the year to build an addition to the village administrative building.
The Frankfort Village Board will consider expanding the village administrative building in 2013. The board discussed a possible expansion at the annual Committee of the Whole meeting in January. The basement of the Frankfort Police Department has been the site of board meetings since 2008, but during the committee’s January meeting, Trustee Dick Trevarthan went so far as to refer to the space as a “bomb shelter.” Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland said that the expansion project would likely cost the village close to $3 million. However, the board has been budgeting for such a project since 2006, when they first discussed selling Heritage Hall, their previous meeting location. The village currently has $4 million designated for an expansion. The …

The board discussed the opening of the upscale grocery store during its Feb. 4 meeting. “It really is going to be an exciting occasion for our community,” said Trustee Mike Stevens. Market employees will begin stocking shelves in the coming weeks. The 74,000-square-foot project is estimated to bring upwards of 400 fulltime and part time jobs to Frankfort. However, not everyone at Tuesday’s meeting …

Frankfort's mayor and trustees discussed plans for the coming fiscal year during the annual meeting of the Committee of the Whole.
Frankfort’s mayor and village trustees brought their ideas to the table on Tuesday evening in a discussion about village priorities for the upcoming fiscal year during the annual meeting of the Committee of the Whole. Mayor Jim Holland suggested that the village consider a one percent sales tax increase with a residential rebate based on property tax paid. The increase, which would require a referendum, would alleviate the tax burden off of residents and transfer it onto people who shop in the village. “It will be controversial, simply because of the fact that it’s, one way or another, adding tax,” said Trustee Kevin Egan. Holland felt that it wouldn’t be practical for the village to take action on the increase for at least a year. If the …
With Mariano's opening soon, the nearest Walgreens location requested approval of a liquor sales permit in order to remain competitive.
The Walgreens location at the intersection of Lincoln Highway and La Grange Road has been granted approval to sell beer and wine by the Frankfort Village Board of Trustees. The board approved the special use permit as part of the unanimous consent agenda at Tuesday’s board meeting. Walgreens sought the permit in order to remain competitive when Mariano’s Fresh Market opens on La Grange in March. The approval was recommended by the village plan commission, which heard a presentation from the manager of the Walgreens location at its Jan. 10 meeting. The store manager also requested the sale of hard liquor, but the board opted not approve hard liquor sales at the location. Walgreens can now devote up to 10 percent of its floor space to the …

Several residents expressed concerns regarding Currie Ford's proposed parking lot project during the public comment portion of Tuesday's village board meeting.
There was standing room only at Tuesday’s meeting of the Frankfort Village Board of Trustees, as residents of the 95th Avenue and Cambridge Court neighborhood came to voice their opposition to a proposed rezoning project during the call for public comments. Currie Motors Ford of Frankfort proposed a parking lot expansion to the village plan commission at a meeting on Jan. 10. The project would require the rezoning of two residential lots on 95th Avenue as commercial property. “It’s going to definitely change the quality of my life,” said Keith Weyker, who lives next to the site of the proposed parking lot. Weyker said that when he purchased his house in 1999, four residential properties stood between his home and the nearest commercial …

Mayor Jim Holland also reminded residents that Winter on the Green begins on Sunday.
Single-family home construction in Frankfort is on the rise. Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland reported at Monday’s village board meeting that the village received 75 single-family home applications in 2012, a 78 percent increase over the amount received in 2011. The latest numbers indicate significant housing growth in Frankfort compared to recent years. In 2009, the village received 19 applications. “It is encouraging to see this increase,” said Holland. The village board voted on Monday to transfer ownership of Michele Bingham Park to the Frankfort Park District. The six-acre property has been leased to the district for years. The park district requested ownership of the land in order to implement long-term park improvements, such as signage …

Patch examines competing proposals to build an emergency facility in Frankfort from Silver Cross Hospital and Riverside Medical Center.
Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee both filed applications with the state last month to bring an emergency medical facility to Frankfort, as was previously reported by Sun-Times Media. Chief Executive Officer of Silver Cross Paul Pawlak expressed his opposition to the Kankakee medical center’s application in a letter to Riverside’s Chief Executive Officer Phillip Kambic, Sun-Times Media said. Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest sent a similar letter to Riverside. But what do these competing projects mean for Frankfort residents? Silver Cross is proposing a 10,000-square-foot, $8.7 million freestanding emergency center at the intersection of Lincoln Highway and 93rd Avenue, according to …
