A traditional lantern parade was held on Saturday, the first day of Frankfort’s 27th annual Christkindl weekend. St. Nicholas led the evening procession, which departed from the Frankfort Historical Museum and ended at Breidert Green. Parade participants were provided with lanterns. Following the parade, community members gathered around a fire on the green to enjoy a few Christmas poems recited by St. Nicholas, as well as cookies and cocoa. Frankfort residents and visitors from across the Chicagoland area gathered Friday evening to share in the holiday spirit at the 32nd annual Candlelight House Walk. The event, which was hosted by the Frankfort Area Historical Society, featured four local homes, all of which were decked out from attic to basement with holiday décor. The Frankfort Historical Museum served an array of cookies to house walkers, while the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce provided appetizers at a holiday open house. The house walk is the historical society’s primary source of revenue. Money raised by the event goes toward funding the society’s various charitable pursuits. The Frankfort Area Historical Society will host the 32nd annual Candlelight House Walk on Friday. “It’s a nice evening out,” said Judy Herder, president of the historical society. Each year, the house walk features several Frankfort homes at their holiday best. The historical society always includes at least one home in historic downtown Frankfort, while the rest are typically located in area subdivisions. The homes will display a Christmas tree and holiday décor. Selected homeowners are each paired with a local florist, who donates a complimentary arrangement to the house, and provides $200 in flowers, which is paid for by the historical society. During the house walk, a brass quintet will travel from house to house, playing holiday music…

Patch sat down with Judy Herder, president of the Frankfort Area Historical Society, who shared several tales of the local ghosts that roam historic Frankfort. “Frankfort is steeped in history,” said Herder. “Maybe all these ghosts just never wanted to leave.” Two Brothers, Two Houses, Two Ghosts Herder’s tales of village hauntings begin in her own turn-of-the-century house on Hickory Street. According to Herder, two brothers named Peter and William Fokers once owned and resided in her home and the home of her next-door neighbor. Herder says that the pocket doors that …

Rachel Gilmore knows a thing or two about Frankfort history, having worked extensively with the Frankfort Area Historical Society and penning an illustrated book about true story of Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman's horse, Sam, and his village connection. But even she was surprised what she found out when she researched the village as part of Arcadia Publishing's Images of America book series. The Frankfort edition, which went on sale this week, captures the history of the area through archival photos, many of which were provided by the local historical society. WATCH: Local Author Investigates Legend of Civil War Horse's Frankfort Connection Over the next week, Gilmore will take readers on a video of Frankfort, uncovering some …
