The fire protection district will host a statewide fire school on Nov. 3. However, the district teaches aspiring firefighters all year round with its internal cadet program.
The Frankfort Fire Protection District will host a one-day statewide cadet fire school facilitated by the Illinois Fire Service Institute on Nov. 3. The program is expected to draw 40-70 cadets from across the state, according to Brian Adcock, a firefighter engineer and training coordinator for the district. The district received a grant from the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal to host the event. Cadets who attend will learn firefighting skills, such as how to use a breathing apparatus and deploy ladders. This is the second time Frankfort has hosted the event. Frankfort is one of a handful of suburbs that oversees an ongoing training program geared toward preparing young people for a career in firefighting. The Frankfort Fire …

Enrico's restaurant was popular among Frankfort residents for its Italian fare. Firefighters showed how much they appreciated the former village landmark this week by smashing glass, busting down walls, cutting holes in the roof and, in general, making a mess of the place. "We don't get many chances to practice on a real building," said Frankfort Fire Protection District training officer Brian Adcock. "So, when this opportunity came along, we jumped at it." Adcock put firefighter through their paces on Monday and Tuesday by having them find simulated fires, practice forcible entries, practice cutting holes in the roof and breaching walls in the building at LaGrange Road and U.S. 30. The practice did not involve real flames. "We'd have had …

Throughout their careers, firefighters probably spend more time training on imaginary fires than they do fighting real ones. But it's that training and preparedness that can mean the difference between saving a life and losing one. And while fire departments invest in simulators and other equipment to stay up to speed, it's no substitution for training on real buildings. WATCH: Groundbreaking Brings Mariano's Step Closer to Opening in Frankfort That's why the Lt. Jeff Otte and engineer Brian Adcock, coordinators for the cadet program for the Frankfort Fire Protection District, jumped at the chance to use the abandoned buildings along LaGrange Road that are being torn down to make way for the new Mariano's Fresh Market grocery store. Cadets…

Greg Prunsky, a student at Western Illinois University, was surprised by the village fire protection district, Soldiers Guardian Angels and Warrior Watch Riders at VFW Post 1493.
Bittersweet was the best way to describe the scene at VFW Post 1493 on the evening of Monday, July 30. When soon-to-be-deployed U.S. Army National Guard reservist Greg Prunsky and his parents pulled into the post's parking lot, they were greeted by friends and family lined up with flags cheering. Prunsky, a Frankfort native, shook hands with the members of the Soldiers Guardian Angels and Warrior Watch Riders that helped organize the event before the rally began. "The support out here is outstanding," said Prunsky, a Western Illinois University student majoring in law enforcement who joined the National Guard in 2008. He's part of a military police unit based at Fort Sheridan. During the get-together a prayer was said by the dozens in …

Cindy Williams is looking for a place to stay after her minivan caught fire in the garage of the home she was renting on Hickory Creek Road.
With her belongings stacked next to her in four beat-up, cardboard boxes, Cindy Williams, her face soot-covered, sat on her front stoop Monday evening and held her cell phone in the air, exasperated that her phone lost its charge while she was talking with her insurance agent.
