Country Market Guide: What You Need to Know Before You Go

The downtown Frankfort staple returns Sunday with an expanded area for vendors. Find out what else is new for the market this year.

Everyone has their own ways to mark the changing seasons, especially when it comes to the switch from winter to spring. For some, it's the first robin. Others, it's the beginning of baseball season. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Oct. 28. Traditionally, the Country Market has been in the Breidert Green parking lot and along Oak Street. But this year, the village has renovated the Fra-Milco Cabinet Co. parking lot on Oak Street and will have vendors set up there, as well. State Could Provide Breaks to Some Market Vendors

If Gov. Pat Quinn signs the legislation, some vendors would be allowed to prepare food in their home kitchens instead of the more expensive commercial kitchens required.

Amid the countless challenges facing small business owners looking to promote their products at area farmers markets are regulations requiring cooked foods to be prepared in a commercial kitchen. But the Illinois House approved legislation this week that would allow some vendors to prepare the food in their home kitchens. The state Senate passed the bill earlier this month. According to the language of the bill, there are measures to prevent that problem: In New Lenox and Mokena, the villages don't have to deal with the permits, regulations …

Market Day Returns to Breidert Green

Sunday marks the return of the spring edition of the Frankfort Country Market.

Despite the cold, rainy weather, Frankfort Country Market manager Merrill Marxmann won't let that stop the market's first spring selling day Sunday on Breidert Green. "I do all my markets rain or shine," Marxmann said. He did add, though, that fresh produce from his Michigan vendors will be in even shorter supply this spring because of the  unseasonably heavy rains and continuous cold weather. "The guy who brings the asparagus said the asparagus hasn't even decided to stick its head out of the ground yet," he said. Typically, the early spring markets are heavy on homemade canned goods, along with hanging baskets, bedding plants and vegetables for home garden, Maxmann added. About 20 vendors are scheduled to open the spring season. New this…
