Lincoln-Way North Recognizes 19 College-Bound Student-Athletes

The school held a ceremony on Wednesday in Frankfort for students-athletes who have committed to play sports in college.

There were so many college signees during Wednesday’s ceremony to recognize student-athletes at Lincoln-Way North, the group could have divided into two teams and played a baseball or softball game. There were 19 Phoenix student-athletes honored in Phoenix Hall. “We’re extremely proud of our student-athletes and especially honored to be a part of this experience,” Lincoln-Way North athletic director Matthew Lyke said. “(Their) representation of Lincoln-Way North is definitely unparalleled.” “They’re great kids going to great colleges,” Lincoln-Way North Principal Dr. Michael Gardner said. “It says a lot about them not only as athletes, but as the people that they are.” The 19 student-athletes are: Alex Arias Sport: Soccer Position: …

Girls Basketball: Andrew Zaps L-Way North at Free Throw Line

Andrew 44, Lincoln-Way North 29. Tough zone defense and a near-perfect night from the free throw line give Thunderbolts their 10th conference win.

The Hot Read: Andrew, clinging to a 15-14 lead early in the third quarter against rival Lincoln-Way North, went on a 13-2 scoring run and pulled away to notch a 44-29 girls basketball victory on Monday night. The T-Bolts’ aggressive 2-2-1 zone defense forced eight third-quarter turnovers and put the Phoenix in a double-digit hole for much of the fourth. The Andrew defense also kept 6-3 Phoenix forward Emily Jenkins silent for much of the night. She scored six second-half points.  Patch’s MVP: Andrew freshman forward Molly Franson scored 12 points and picked up six rebounds off the bench as the T-Bolts' sixth man. Eight of her 12 points came on three-point plays. She did a credible job on defense, keeping Jenkins in check for much of the …

Girls Basketball: Stagg Upsets Cold-Shooting L-Way North

Chargers hand Phoenix key Southwest Suburban Red setback.

When a team is going after a conference championship, winning home games against teams with records below .500 are often must-win contests. That's the scenario that Lincoln-Way North faced when it met Stagg in a Southwest Suburban Conference Red Division girls basketball game on Thursday. While the Phoenix needed a win to move into a first-place tie with Andrew, which beat Lincoln-Way West on Thursday, the Chargers were hoping to continue their recent improved play. North hurt its own cause with some very poor second-half shooting and Stagg capitalized by executing well during the final quarter. The Chargers turned a 33-33 tie through three quarters into a 44-39 lead with just over a minute remaining against the Phoenix. Stagg sealed the …

Andrew Closes Well to Beat Lincoln-Way North

T-Bolt girls basketball team improves to 4-1 in SWSC Red and hands Phoenix first league loss.

A year ago, Andrew's girls basketball team lost all three of the games that it played against Lincoln-Way North. So, it's understandable why T-Bolt coach Bobby Matz and his team were so excited about what happened on Tuesday. Andrew not only turned the tables on the Phoenix, it did so in Frankfort with both teams fighting to stay in the conference race. The T-Bolts outscored North 15-9 in the final quarter to claim a 52-45 Southwest Suburban Conference Red Division win. As a result, both Andrew (13-2, 4-1) and North (14-4, 4-1) are now one game behind Lincoln-Way West (5-0) in the league standings. Lauren Mangin scored 14 points, while Sarah Barracca added 12 points to lead the T-Bolts, who took control with a late 11-2 run. "They took us …

Romeoville Stuns LW North to Win Oak Lawn Tourney

Spartans' Currie wins MVP award; Phoenix's Schuh earns spot on all-tournament team.

OAK LAWN – The last time the Romeoville girls basketball team played in a Christmas tournament championship game, most of the current Spartans weren't born yet. Romeoville stunned Lincoln-Way North 60-50 Wednesday night in the championship game of the Oak Lawn Holiday Tournament. It's the first tournament championship for the Spartans in at least 18 years. "It's been at least 18 years since Romeoville's been in a championship, must less won it," Romeoville sophomore guard Abby Smith said. "To win it is even better. Christmas tournament champions. It feels good to say that." "We came out there with a lot of confidence," Romeoville sophomore Kiera Currie said. "Coach really built us up to get to this game and win it. Coach told us it was all…

Jenkins Leads L-Way North Past Stagg

Phoenix run record to 5-1 with 50-32 victory over Chargers.

It was a big night for Lincoln-Way North's Emily Jenkins. Jenkins, a senior forward, scored 16 points as the Phoenix rolled to a 50-32 girls basketball victory over Stagg on Thursday night. The Chargers held Lincoln-Way North (5-1) to  four points in the first quarter and jumped to an 8-4 lead. Then, the North started to fight back. The Phoenix gained an 11-8 lead off a 3-pointer from junior forward Taylor Boardman. Later, LaDonna Gettis scored a basket that capped a spurt that put North on top 23-14 at the half. In the third quarter, Jenkins started off the scoring for the Phoenix with a shot to give them a 25-14 lead. She struck again with back-to-back baskets to give North a 39-27 lead at the end of the third. Stagg sophomore guard …

Lincoln-Way North Picks Up Where it Left Off

Big fourth-quarter run helps Phoenix tame Tigers in girls basketball opener.

With four returning starters, the Lincoln-Way North girls basketball team was looking to pick up where it left off from a 20-9 season of a year ago. Leading 41-36 early in the fourth quarter, the Phoenix went on a 16-0 run en route to a 61-38 season-opening victory over Plainfield North on Monday night. Lincoln-Way North (1-0) led 36-30 entering the fourth quarter, then outscored Plainfield North (0-1) 25-8 over the final eight minutes. "In the fourth quarter, we settled down and started executing some things," Lincoln-Way North coach Jim Nair said. "We got a few backdoors and some easy buckets for us." Senior forward Erynn Schuh led the Phoenix with 21 points to go along with eight rebounds. Emily Jenkins, a 6-foot-3 senior forward, added…

Phoenix Ready to Rule Roost Again

Lincoln-Way North girls basketball team has enough firepower to stand atop the Southwest Suburban Red once again.

After struggling as a first-year program in 2008-09, Lincoln-Way North's girls basketball team enjoyed a breakthrough season a year ago. North coach Jim Nair's Phoenix posted a 20-9 mark, which was highlighted by them sharing the Southwest Suburban Red Conference championship with Andrew. North loses only one senior player from last season's squad, Sam Nekola, who moved on to Trinity Christian College. With so many pieces to the puzzle in place, the third-year coach hopes to see the Phoenix back in the mix in a competitive SWSC Red race. "We will have some very tough conference battles with Andrew, Thornton and Lincoln-Way West again this year," Nair said. "Lincoln-Way West is well-coached and has all its players returning from a regional …
