Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

By David Mills One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. In 2011, 323 people were killed by alcohol-related crashed in Illinois, which makes up 35 percent of the 918 total crash …

A Trio of DUI Reports from Frankfort: Blotter

Frankfort police reports, April 27.

SATURDAY, APRIL 27 Kristen D. Trice, 23, of the 11500 block of Tea Tree Lane, Frankfort, was charged with driving under the influence, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, failing to display license and improper lane use, according to a report. She was stopped near the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Plank Trail Drive. Trice is due on June 7 in Will County court. Brooke N. Daverin, 27, of the 100 block of Prairie Avenue, Bradley, was charged with driving under the influence and speeding, according to a report. She was stopped in the 400 block of Nebraska Street. Mokena police report, March 31.

SUNDAY, MARCH 31 Chris E. Novy, 41, of the 20500 block of South Grand Prairie Lane in Frankfort, was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended or revoked license and improper lane use, according to a report. Novy was stopped at about 3:31 a.m. in the 19400 block of South LaGrange Road after police reportedly saw him swerve between lanes and drive far slower than the posted limit, among other infractions. Novy told police he and his passenger had stopped at White Castle for hamburgers and were looking for a motel to stay at, according to the report. Police reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Novy submitted to field sobriety tests and a portable breath test but refused a take another breath test…

Gary Neff was arrested in January, 2012 for having sex with the 16 year old daughter of a Mokena resident that rented him a room in her house on Glennell. How did Will County authorities lose track of him from January 2012 til March 2012 on this DUI charge. He was convicted on drug charges in 2006.   MOKENA Feb. 8: Taiwo Erinle, 32, of New Lenox, was found passed out at the wheel of his car with the engine running. The car was found at 3:45 a.m. Feb. 8 in the middle of two lanes of traffic on 191st St. at Wolf Road. According to the report, police said Taiwo Erinle's foot was on the brake, but the car was in the drive position. He was passed out at the wheel with the windows rolled up and rap music blaring.  The officer drove the squad about six inches in front of Erinle's car. He placed a push bar between the two bumpers to prevent Erinle's car from moving into traffic unexpectedly.  Police say it took shining a flashlight into the vehicle, pounding on the window and yelling to stir Erinle from his stupor.
