State Extends Local Elections Filing Deadline to 5 PM Dec. 26

The Illinois Senate amends its election code so that candidates in local elections—from City Council to School Board—can submit nominating petitions until 5 p.m. on the day after Christmas.

Merry Christmas, candidates in local elections: You have an extra day to get your name on the April 2013 ballot! A new state law, passed Nov. 29 by both houses of the General Assembly, is also good news to municipal clerks, school board secretaries, township clerks, park district and library secretaries and other local election officials who were previously required to accept candidate petitions until 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve, regardless of whether their respective governmental offices were open. The law is effective immediately. Senate Bill 3338 amends Section 1-4 of the Election Code to specify that, for the 2013 consolidated election period, local election officials have until 5 p.m. Dec. 26 to accept candidates' petitions or …

UPDATE: Cigarette Tax Could be Good for Business

The high cost of cigarettes in Cook County is driving smokers across the Will County line.

Updated: 12:46 p.m. Friday The Cook County Board approved the proposed budget, including the one-dollar tax increase on cigarettes, on Nov. 9, according to WGN Radio. --- Will County businesses that sell tobacco and border the Cook County line may benefit from a proposed one-dollar tax increase on cigarettes purchased in Cook County. The tax increase was proposed by Cook County Board president Toni Preckwinkle and will be up for tentative approval on Nov. 9, along with the entire Cook County budget. A pack of cigarettes currently carries a two-dollar tax from Cook County. If the proposal passes, the tax would increase the total state and county taxes on cigarettes to $4.98 a pack for residents. The hike keeps prices in the Chicagoland area…

Will GOP Declares Independence From 'Chicago Machine'

Infuriated by new district maps in Illinois, Will County Republican officials and candidates signed a "declaration of independence," calling on voters to stop the "tentacles of Cook County" from reaching into Will County policy.

Area Republicans rallied Monday to declare independence from "the tentacles of Cook County and Chicago politics" reaching into Will County. The gesture was symbolic but served to fire up a crowd of well over 100 people as the Nov. 6 election nears.  Last year, Illinois Democrats drew new state and congressional districts that Republicans say could remove any Will County representation in Congress. "We have to take back what's ours and make sure we stand up for it," said Dave Carlson, the Republican candidate for Will County state attorney. "To implement what we believe in, we need the voters' support in November." Want to blog about politics on Patch? Email michael.sewall@patch.com. State Court Violates Constitution by Appointing Frankfort Resident to Cook County Bench

Cynthia Cobbs was chosen by the Illinois Supreme Court last month to fill an open judgeship in a county she doesn't reside in, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The appointment of a longtime Frankfort resident to fill a Cook County judgeship is in violation of the Illinois Constitution, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune. Cynthia Cobbs was picked by the Illinois Supreme Court in September to fill an opening on the Cook County bench, but she's not a resident of the county, which is a requirement under the Constitution, the report said. Her home in Frankfort went on the market Oct. 14, days after the Tribune began investigating her residency. Cobbs, a former law clerk for State Supreme Court Justice Charles Freeman, would not comment about the appointment to the Tribune. A spokesman for the court said the justices were within their rights to place Cobb on the bench, something legal experts…

Cook County Resubmits Plan to Shut Down Oak Forest Hospital

A 24-hour non-emergency clinic is now part of the county's pitch.

The effort to shut down Oak Forest Hospital as an inpatient center hit a roadblock a few weeks ago when Cook County's plan failed to secure approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board. A new pitch to the state regulators features a 24-hour-a-day clinic as well as a Southland advisory board, reports Greg Hinz on his blog at Crain's Chicago Business. Without public announcement, the county submitted paperwork for a crucial approval — known as a certificate of need — with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, which twice recently has said "no" to similar requests. The latest version is somewhat different. Oak Forest Hospital still would be closed as a medical center and be converted into an out-…

Sheriff Accuses South Suburban Men of Selling Fake MLB, Nike and Timberland Gear

Men from Orland Park, Oak Lawn, Chicago Ridge and Chicago are charged in a counterfeit goods ring after police raid their stores and seize 4,000 items.

Six south suburban men—including one from Orland Park and another from Oak Lawn—were busted by the Cook County sheriff's police and accused of operating a counterfeit sales ring featuring knockoffs of Nike, Timberland and Major League Baseball apparel. Police say they seized more than 4,000 items, including shoes, jackets, hats and shirts, with an estimated value of $150,000. Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Saturday that the ring sold the knockoffs from stores in the suburbs and Chicago. The Special Operations Unit began investigating the ring in early March after receiving a tip from a concerned citizen. Over the course of several weeks, investigators conducted surveillance and undercover purchases. On April 12th and 13th, …
