Phoenix standout Brandon Collins sparkles defensively at first base and tears the cover off the ball, too.
Spending hours on the hardwood as a member of the basketball team could’ve led to a slow start for Lincoln-Way North senior first baseman Brandon Collins. Instead, Collins already appears in mid-season form on the baseball diamond. Through Saturday, Collins was 5-for-14 at the plate. Even in the team’s first loss of the season, a 9-6 decision to Oak Lawn, he had the biggest offensive highlights with two triples. He’s hitting .357 on the season with a slugging percentage that checks in near the .500 mark. And, as a result of his torrid start, Collins is featured as the Patch Athlete of the Week. “A quiet leader for our team,” Lincoln-Way North coach Joe Skarbek said. Skarbek also considers Collins to be one of the best defensive first …

Lincoln-Way North boys fall to 0-3 at the Plainfield North tournament with loss to state-ranked Benet.
PLAINFIELD—Lincoln-Way North's boys basketball team was at the wrong end of two close losses to start the Plainfield North tournament. The Phoenix fell by three points to Lockport and one to the host Tigers, with both teams coming into their respective games with just one loss. Thursday, however, North faced a whole different animal in state-ranked Benet Academy. The Phoenix hung around early, trailing by only four points at the half, but the Redwings roared through the second half and handed the Phoenix a 71-49 loss to drop Lincoln-Way North to 2-8 on the season. "The last two games, I believe that we should have won," Phoenix senior Jake Harper said. "We just have to learn how to win. We can't choke at the end all the time. "Tonight we …

Lincoln-Way North unable to overcome early deficit on road against Indians.
Lemont's boys basketball team faced the difficult assignment of trying to beat the same team twice within the first eight days of the season. In Tuesday's non-conference game with Lincoln-Way North in Lemont, the Indians used a similar formula to what worked in last Monday's opener for both squads. After jumping out to a big advantage in the early going, Lemont held off a spirited comeback by North to eventually capture a 61-49 victory. Last Monday at North's Thanksgving Tournament, the Indians led by as much as 21 points and saw its lead dwindle to four before posting a 65-58 win. The Indians (3-2) led 22-7 after one quarter in Tuesday's rematch, but saw the Phoenix (2-3) pull to within 46-44 early in the final period. However, Lemont …

Lincoln-Way North boys basketball squad features a new head coach in John Terry, along with nine seniors.
John Terry has looked forward to having the opportunity to run his own boys basketball program for quite some time. After being a longtime coach at all levels at Lincoln-Way East and then the varsity assistant at Andrew last season, he'll finally get his chance. Terry takes over the program at Lincoln-Way North from Bob Curran, who heads across the district to assume the same position at Lincoln-Way Central. "This is the opportunity of a lifetime for me," Terry said. "It's a great school with a great administration, so it's all worked out great. "I'm looking forward to getting to know the players better and teaching them a few things about the greatest game ever invented. I'm endeavoring to establish a program based on teamwork, defense, …
