D161 Board Makes More District Staff Cuts

The Summit Hill school board approved the elimination of nine non-certified staff positions at Wednesday's meeting at Arbury Hills School. Board members also froze administrative and non-certified staff salaries for the 2013 fiscal year.

The Summit Hill School District 161 board of education approved the elimination of nine non-certified positions Wednesday, while at the same time freezing the 2013 fiscal year salaries for administrative and non-certified staff. The board's votes came after members were in closed session for almost three hours. Six full-time employees and three part-time staffers were cut because of declining enrollment and the decision in February to close Mary Drew School at the end of the school year, Supt. Barb Rains said, adding that the full-timers were honorable dissmissals and have recall rights. Non-certified employees fill positions that do not require a teaching certificate. Rains would not indicate which schools the employees are from until she…

Wow its seems like people that live in glass houses like to throw a lot of stones.... It's not called whining its called using your common sense! The rest of us who have worked hard and made the right decisions shouldn't be punished. What does freezing an administrative salary that is about 130,000 a year doing? Absolutely nothing! Let alone the rest of the administration. That is a PR ploy to …   more ›

Board Approves New School Boundaries for D161

With the closing of Mary Drew Elementary School next year, the Summit Hill school board gave the OK to a new map that distributes the students to maximize the remaining schools.

The Summit Hill School District 161 board unveiled and approved new boundaries Wednesday, outlining which schools students will attend in a post-Mary Drew world.  The new boundary lines were drawn with an eye to distributing students so the district could maximize capacity in all of its schools, said Supt. Barb Rains, who presented the new map to the new superintendent's advisory committee earlier this month before bringing it before the board to vote on at Wednesday night's meeting.  The new district map was needed after the board voted to close Mary Drew Elementary School as part of a three-year budget-cutting plan developed to eliminate a more than $3 million deficit.  READ: Board Votes Again to Close Mary Drew Using the above map, the …

VIDEO: Program Lets Students Be Mayor--and Other Village Officials--for the Day

For Student Government Day, Hickory Creek Middle School eighth-graders assume the roles of Frankfort administrators to learn firsthand how local government works.

In 1999, when Frankfort Trustee Cindy Heath started working with Hickory Creek Middle School students for Student Government Day, the process was a little less structured. But in the following years, the program has become such a rich simulation of what it's like to serve in local government that students must compete for the honor of serving as a village elected official or staff member for the day. In 2011, more than 50 applications were submitted, said 157-C Everest teacher Linda Thompson, who works with Heath to facilitate the hands-on learning process. "Usually we can accommodate a few seventh graders," Thompson said, "but not this year. We had so many applications." Eighteen eighth grade students filled the village roles from mayor …

Mayor Honors Police Officer for His Lifesaving Actions

Frankfort Police Officer Michael Pazera receives state medal after saving a Chelsea Intermediate School student from choking.

Mayor Jim Holland presented Frankfort Police Officer Michael Pazera with a state lifesaving award at Tuesday's Village Board meeting for saving a Chelsea Intermediate School student from choking last month. Pazera, who is the school's DARE officer, performed the Heimlich maneuver on Billy Jonkman on Jan. 25 when the student approached the officer during lunch, indicating he couldn't breathe. The officer was able to dislodge the food--a piece of cheese--from Jonkman's windpipe.  "It's a wonderful thing," Holland said. "It's nice to see our police are where they can respond effectively." Jonkman also presented Pazera with a card at the meeting. "That's not necessary but glad to see everything is great," Pazera said to the boy. Board members …

Frankfort Village Board Roundup: New Police Ordinances and a 2011 Zoning Map

We break down what board members voted on and approved at Tuesday's meeting.

CORRECTION (4:01 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23): In an earlier version of this story, it incorrectly stated that the 2011 zoning map included a training center for the Lincolnway Special Recreation Association. The map includes a transition center for the Lincoln-Way Special Education District 843. We regret the error. The Village Board approved a variety of ordinances and code amendments at Tuesday's meeting. Here are the details: The request: Approval of four police ordinances recommended by the Village Land Use and Policy Committee at its Feb. 7 meeting.  What it means: The ordinances reflected changes in the village code in four different areas: Any comments by the board or public? Asked by Trustee Cynthia Heath for clarification about the …
