L-W East Officials Shower Praise on Gatorade Track Athlete of the Year Aaliyah Brown

Lincoln-Way East girls track and field standout Aaliyah Brown is recognized as the 2012 Gatorade Illinois Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year during a ceremony at school on Thursday.

"Mature for her age." "... works very hard to excel at an incredible level." The words were used to describe Lincoln-Way East track and field standout Aaliyah Brown during a formal presentation at school Thursday to recognize her for being named the 2012 Gatorade Illinois Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Brown, who just started her senior year at Lincoln-Way East, led the Griffins to a fourth-place finish in the Class 3A state meet last spring. She won the 200-meter dash (24.18) and placed second in the 100 (11.67). She also ran legs on two second-place relay teams. Brown teamed with Sydney Barrera, Maria Perozzi and Dana O'Grady for a clocking of 47.66 in the 4x100 and with O'Grady, Perozzi and Nicole Nepote for a time of 3:52.45 …

This Year, Weather Doesn't Delay Signing Day for 9 L-W East Student-Athletes

Nine Griffins student-athletes signed with college teams on Wednesday. Here's what they had to say about their decisions and what they'll miss from East.

Last year's blizzard put National Signing Day on hold for Lincoln-Way East High School student-athletes announcing their colleges of choice. But weather was no problem Wednesday as parents and L-W East coaches and administrators celebrated the letters of intent signings for seven football players and two baseball players from the high school. "I couldn't be more proud of the fact that you've earned what you've deserved," said David Brost, East's athletics director. "You've worked very hard. You've become role models for so many kids that will enter our doors at Lincoln-Way East over the next years to come." YEAR IN REVIEW: Top Sports Stories of 2011

The year was marked with successes--as well as tragedy--for athletes and teams in Frankfort. What story do you think should be at the top of the list?

We went through the sports stories of the past year to select the headlines that people were talking about. These are the top five: The tragic death of this Lincoln-Way East High School freshman in September after being hit by a car during cross-country practice in Palos Township devastated the L-W community. Moments of silence were held at the football home games for L-W East and North, and in a very touching display, Patrick's cross-country teammates honored his memory by running as a group at their next meet. Family and friends filled St. Anthony's Catholic Church to say goodbye to the boy. The longtime soccer coach was abruptly let go by East in September. School officials cited wanting to go in a different direction as the reason for …

UPDATED: Winkler Earns State Player of the Year Honor From ESPN, Gatorade

The Lincoln-Way East quarterback was chosen for his stellar play on the field, as well as his academic and personal achievements off of it.

Blake Winkler's a talented quarterback. High school football fans around the Southland knew it, Lincoln-Way East opponents knew it, and Patch Sports Editor Ron Kremer certainly knew it (he picked him as Patch Player of the Year). Now, the rest of the country is privy to that fact. READ: Winkler, Malec Recognized as Patch Player, Coach of the Year Winkler was named the Illinois Player of the Year as part of the Gatorade State Player of the Year program Thursday. A selection team from ESPNHS chose winners based on "athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character," according to the sports website. Oak Forest's Tevin Coleman, Andrew's Mike Love, Brother Rice's Martez Walker, Providence Catholic's Ryan Ward, Tinley Park's Zack Webster and Lincoln-Way East's Blake Winkler are honored by the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association.

On the final weekend of the high school football season, six Southland Patch players will be recognized during introductions of the IHSFCA All-State teams in Champaign. The introductions will coincide with the playing of state championship games Friday and Saturday at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium. Brother Rice running back Martez Walker was named to the Class 8A all-state team by the IHSFCA. He led the Crusaders to an 8-5 record, setting single-season and career scoring records. Brother Rice dropped a 39-6 decision to Mount Carmel in the Catholic League Blue title game. In Class 7A, Lincoln-Way East quarterback Blake Winkler, Providence Catholic offensive lineman Ryan Ward and Andrew offensive lineman Mike Love were picked …

High School Football's Finest: Winkler, Malec Recognized as Patch Player, Coach of the Year

Lincoln-Way East quarterback Blake Winkler and Andrew coach Jim Malec enjoyed remarkable high school football seasons. The two are my Patch picks for Player and Coach of the Year honors.

An old friend of mine, Edgy Tim O’Halloran, noted recently in his column for the Chicago Tribune how impossible it is to select a high school football Player of the Year and a Coach of the Year. To be sure, this is a task that falls under the category of inexact science. Do you side with the best player? Or the best player on the most successful team? And do you automatically pick the winningest coach? Or do you like the coach who turned a sleeping giant into a winner? Tough questions. No right or wrong answers, either. After boiling my list of candidates down to five, I picked Lincoln-Way East quarterback Blake Winkler as the winner of my Southland Patch Player of the Year sweepstakes. He earned the nod over Oak Forest running back Tevin …

Lincoln-Way East Has Empty Feeling After Second-Round Loss

Griffins' offense comes to a screeching halt against quick, aggressive defense of two-time Class 7A defending state champs, Wheaton Warrenville South.

Lincoln-Way East had pressured opponents all season with quarterback Blake Winkler and dangerous wide receivers J.J. Robertson and Jay Yancy. During Friday night’s Class 7A second-round matchup against two-time defending state champion Wheaton Warrenville South, it was Winkler and Co. who succumbed to the pressure. The visiting Tigers won their 12th straight postseason game while keeping the Griffins from winning their 11th consecutive game of the season and ending East’s campaign with a 7-0 victory. “It was an absolute special defensive effort by them,” Lincoln-Way East coach Rob Zvonar said. “We had a few opportunities early in the game but didn’t want to believe that those early scoring chances would come back and haunt us.” Lincoln-Way…

Class 7A Football Playoffs: L-W East Season Stopped Cold by Two-Time Defending Champ

Wheaton Warrenville South 7, Lincoln-Way East 0: Griffins get the ball into the red zone but not the end zone, as they lose for the first time this season and exit the postseason.

Breaking It Down: Lincoln-Way East’s mission of running the table and winning a Class 7A state football championship were halted Friday night by the team that has won back-to-back state titles. Eighth-seeded Wheaton Warrenville South traveled to Frankfort and upset the top-seeded Griffins by a 7-0 score. Lincoln-Way East’s William Will missed field-goal attempts of 38 and 46 yards in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Wheaton Warrenville South's Nick Campos hammered a 56-yard punt down to the Lincoln-Way East 3-yard line. The Tigers forced the Griffins into a three-and-out, and after a short punt by East, the Tigers took possession at the Lincoln-Way East 24-yard line. On third-and-3 from the 17-yard line, Wheaton Warrenville …

Never count of the champ there the champ until they get knocked off was a great game one of the best ive seen in my 30 years of watching. Football Photo Gallery: L-W East Sails Through Opening Round of 7A Playoffs

J.J. Robertson scored two touchdowns and Lincoln-Way East rolled to a 35-7 victory over Plainfield South on Friday night in Frankfort.

Lincoln-Way East marched 82 yards in three plays and J.J. Robertson scored the Griffins' first touchdown in a 35-7 victory over Plainfield South in the opening round of the Class 7A football playoffs on Friday night in Frankfort. The victory was the 10th straight for the Griffins and sends them into Round 2 next weekend against Wheaton Warrenville South. Wheaton Warrenville defeated Providence Catholic 23-16. Plainfield South didn't go down without putting up a bit of a fit. The Cougars tied the score 7-7 and intercepted a Blake Winkler pass. But East's D-Line "Tarzan package" kept Plainfield South from scoring again by stopping the Cougars on a fourth-down play. Jay Yancy scored on a 47-yard pass from Winkler to give East a 14-7 lead. …

L-W East Football Coach Winning the Bigger Game

As playoffs approach Rob Zvonar sets his own rules, builds long-lasting relationships with his players and keeps his perspective on coaching, football and life.

On a dark day in mid-October, the man standing in the center of Lincoln-Way East’s defensive huddle looks like an ordinary football coach. Rob Zvonar is dressed for the part, wearing royal blue and black athletic gear, the colors true to his school. The layers are designed to keep rain and chill out. What he lets in is most important here. The questions from his players in a brief wrap-up session on the south end of East’s TurfField are evidence of a commonplace dialogue in Zvonar’s classroom. He is an extraordinary individual, one who teaches life lessons along with football skills, not in a classroom room with desks lined neatly in rows, rather his is canvas and easel that stretches 53 1/3 yards across and 120 yards in length, sideline-…

I know I'm a little late in seeing this article, but I still feel as though it is worthy to post a comment. I watched Rob play for Monticello High School under Hud Venerable watchful eye. I believe I was probably 11 or 12 years old at the time and Monticello was on a 4-year tear through the IHSA. This winning tradition was started and led by middle linebacker Rob Zvonar and man could that guy hit…   more ›
