No Injuries in New Lenox House Fire

Flames scorch most of the house at 218 E. Fourth Ave. but firefighters rescue the family cat.

No one was hurt in a fire that badly damaged a New Lenox house on Saturday evening. Neighbors noticed smoke streaming from the home at 218 E. Fourth Ave. a little after 3:30 p.m. and quickly called 911. Within minutes, firefighters from nearby Station 1 responded to the scene. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire, said Fire Chief Jonathan Mead. "My son saw it first," said Beth Parker, who lives next door. "At first we just saw smoke and then we started to see some flames." Area fire departments contributed to the effort with the Manhattan, East Joliet, Frankfort and Mokena departments all assisting, Mead said.
