The Summit Hill School District 161 Board of Education unanimously voted to approve the 2012 tax levy for approximately $32.2 million at a meeting on Dec. 12. The 2012 levy is a $1.55 million increase over the levy in 2011, raising the district tax rate to just above 3.7 percent. This translates to a $69 property tax increase for the owner of a $200,000 house. Prior to the vote, the board held a public hearing regarding the levy. The Frankfort School District 157-C Board of Education unanimously voted to adopt the district’s 2012 operating tax levy of $24.75 million on Monday evening at a district board meeting. In total, the 2012 levy will be approximately $29.35 million, which is about $10,000 less than the 2011 levy. The levy approved on Monday does not include the district bond amount because district refinancing for 2012 is not yet complete. The bonds are anticipated to come to about $4.8 million, and will include a $200,000 district abatement. “I feel very good,” said Curt Saindon, assistant superintendent for finance operations for the district. “We haven’t had to make major cuts that affect class size, that affect instruction.” Frankfort School District …

The Frankfort Village Board voted unanimously to approve the 2012 tax levy for approximately $2.85 million at a board meeting on Monday evening. The 2012 levy has an estimated tax rate of .3391 and represents a 4.16 percent decrease from last year’s levy of approximately $2.98 million, according to documents provided by the board. Frankfort’s equalized assessed value decreased by 5 percent during the last year. The village also experienced a $9 million increase in new growth in 2012, documents state, although in past years the village has seen new growth increases as high as $30-40 million, according to Board Trustee Cynthia Heath. The Frankfort School District 157-C Board of Education discussed teaching strategies surrounding the statewide Common Core Standards at a board meeting at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12. Several district administrators were in attendance to provide insight into the day-to-day implementation of the new state standards. Common Core is a set of statewide curricular standards aimed at preparing students for college and the workforce. The Common Core assessment system will be in place by the 2014-15 school year.
