They get enough that the school will have you arrested if they find out your kid does not go the theRead More correct district they live in. WHY so much? While we sit and learn for months and coloring pictures in 8th grade of Malcom X MLK the people your government does not want you to be like in the first place. We file for grants for after school programs to teach English, math, science. Just look at the school today my kid says for the last quarter they haven't done anything but watch movies and hang around. Is this because of the grade issue? If your school does not meet the standards they want to shut it down. How do you go around that? You stuff as much as you can into them first 3 quarters.4 quarter they start out with A's if you do no work then all got A's on last quarter almost guaranteeing a pass. It's all becoming Government against the teachers...then teachers against the students and parents for money for their school. Actually arresting parents that have their kids going to schools outside their districts. Freedom of choice...Freedom!!...Not in America.

This is unfortunate, generally, on both sides. I am just taken aback by the ridiculously biased wayRead More the teens are described in the clip. They look more like "a homecoming king and queen?" So, their "look" leads media representatives in that piece to attempt to drum-up sympathy for them. If history has shown us anything, had those kids been in goodies or of an ethnic minority group, there would not have been any photos of smiling faces or comments about their homecoming-quality.

The 'quality adjustment' to the AP results appear to be the only basis as to why DHS wasn't rankedRead More above Stevenson - as the # 1 truly 'public' [taking all comers - not getting to pick and choose its student body - like the academies and/or magnets] in the State of Illinois. OK, so, DHS will have to 'try harder.' As for Highland-Park, what's the story over there; and the same goes for New Trier? My, how the once mighty have fallen. Go Big Red!

And I love the automatic labelling as a woman hater just because we don't like Hillary. ObviouslyRead More if you disagree with Obama, then you're racist. But what about if we are sick of John McCain? So now I'm a woman-hater, a racist, and a man-hater (veteran-hater? Ageist?)? Who does that leave? I am not a woman-hater. I'm a Hillary-hater.
Michael Hipp April 24, 2014 at 08:44 am

TO THE EDITOR....I'm seriously disappointed by the removal of peoples comments overnight.... Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Jennifer April 24, 2014 at 07:53 am
So Cow Dung, Gary has said it all in a much more straight-forward way. Everything he says is true,Read More and the information can be found, and checked, in MANY places. Just NOT on the Common Core website.

Why do I have a problem with the Gates foundation? I think I said it before. They funded theRead More organizations that wrote the standards. They funded the organizations that reviewed the standards. They fuinded every group that supposedly had "input" into the development of the standards. There is NO record of what the "input" consisted of, or if any of it was implemented. All we really have on record is the Content advisor for Mathematics, Jim Milgrim, prof. at Stanford, explaining why he refused to endorse the math standard. We have the English Language content advisor, Sandra Slotsky, explaining why she, likewise, could not sign off on the standards. And she explains that she has sat on many such committees before, in her role in developing Massachussetts very well-respected standards, and she said that this is the first time she was required to sign a non-disclosure. She said such committees are usually subject to "Sunshine" laws. These are specific people, highly qualified people, giving specific and detailed testimony. But you would rather keep pointing to the CC website vaguely referring to "how educators were involved".
Jennifer April 24, 2014 at 08:39 am
I looked at the Wisconsin link you provided, and it gave a list of teachers on an ELA standardsRead More leadership team. This was out of context, and undated, so I dont really have an indication that it had anything to do with reviewing the CC standards, but assuming you just didn't copy enough pages into the link.....thay could list every teacher in America, by name, school, and department. If there are no records of what, if any recommendations were made, leading to what if any changes to the standards, I dont really see what that would prove. And since, as I have said, teachers and administrators at the local level are presumably under a gag order - if their states have signed agreements similar to NY - I don't know how we can be expected to trust anything about the CC. As I have said, I have several friends from college and HS who have been teaching for 25 + yrs, and my sister-in-law is a Vice Principal at a highly-ranked school in a highly-ranked state - and they all, across the board, HATE the program and what it does to children. And you can read the standards, but you do not have access to the agreements the states have signed, and do not know what other , untried methods of teaching will be mandatory under the Core.

FOR THOSE WHO LIKE AMAZON PRIME OVER NETFLIX: Here's an interesting article from today (23 Apr 2014)Read More about how Amazon Prime just got HBO to stream at least some of its older content, plus "HBO GO," to Amazon's new Fire TV box, thereby making NetFlix upset because NetFlix (nor any other streaming service, including HULU) has never been able to get any HBO content; and so Amazon has scored a real coup! TC, Illinois has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, pretty sure we could fillRead More those teaching spots overnight. With the technology we have today we could easily supplement the cost of these state breaking pensions that fraudulently get bumped up in a teacher's final years. Charter schools are doing a better job without union teachers. During Chicago's teacher strike I listened to union teachers that barely spoke English. No complaints about the salaries, just get rid of the pensions.

I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!!
