Kids Reel in Fish, Prizes at Frankfort Derby

High temperatures didn't keep 55 kids from heading out to Prairie Park for the ninth annual catch-and-release Get Hooked on Frankfort Fishing Derby. Find out who the fish were biting for at the event.

Trying to catch fish when it is already 80 degrees at 8 a.m. can be a challenge, even when there are prizes involved.

But the 55 kids, ranging in age from 3 to 12 years old, made it look easy Saturday, July 7, while hooking hundreds of fish at the at .

"We had more fish than we thought we really would with the water being so warm," said Mary Canino, 's community relations manager.

Prizes, including tackle boxes and fishing poles, were awarded for the categories of most fish and biggest fish caught in both the 3-to-7 and 8-to-12 age brackets.

Amaya Johnson, 4, and Brayden O'Sullivan, 11, both of Frankfort, gathered the most fish out of all the participants in their brackets with totals of 19 and 12, respectively.

Two Indiana boys, however, hooked the biggest fish in the derby. Dylan Zaltouski, 5, of Portage, Ind., hauled in a 12-inch bass, while Brynn Berwanger, 4, of Dyer, Ind., earned biggest catch honors in his age group with an 11-inch-long fish.

The event usually draws around 100 children, but the high temperatures last week might have led some parents and kids to stay in their air-conditioned houses. Canino was still very pleased with the turnout, adding that it seemed everyone enjoyed themselves at the event.

"It was just plain fun," said Mayor Jim Holland. "They were catching fish like mad. I think everyone caught at least one fish. It's just so much fun to watch children have fun with their parents and grandparents."

With their entry fees, participants received a T-shirt, juice, Goldfish crackers, fishing hooks and bait.
