Minding the Patch: Rookie Gardener Alert

Denise is on vacation, drinking umbrella beverages while dipping her toe in the Atlantic Ocean. Responsibility for maintaining the Patch's Patch has been passed down to me. Oh, the pressure . . . !

Hello, my name is Sue and I have been “chosen” to tend to the community garden Patch located at Lincoln-Way East high school. The competition was fierce (think American Idol-like competition), but I persevered and proved my master gardening skills to Denise Du Vernay. Gosh, that sounds impressive – but it is totally fiction.  Denise was desperately looking for someone to look over the garden so she could leave Chicago to enjoy the fresh ocean air on the East Coast. I was the one and only person to respond, so what choice did she have?!  (Not exactly the “pick of the litter.”) In any case, you are stuck with me for at least a week.

I’ve lived in Frankfort with my family for about 21 years. My oldest son just graduated from LWE in June and, until a week ago, I had absolutely no idea that the community garden area existed at the high school! It’s fascinating to see how the different plots are maintained – many representing the unique personality of their “owner.” My gardening skills are limited, but I’m willing to learn from our readers and experiment with various plants and techniques.

Denise has done a great job in planting and maintaining our little plot of garden.  In particular, the acorn squash seems to really like this hot, humid weather.  There are at least three blooms that are progressing very nicely. (I will try to post a picture later this week.) The tomatoes and pepper plants are getting bigger and should yield produce very soon. Unfortunately, we have been discovered by some wildlife and it seems our plants are a tasty addition to their diet. We’d welcome any thoughts or suggestions on ways to keep the wildlife away.

I plan to visit soon to see if there are any mid to late-season varieties that we can try to make work. Again, suggestions are welcome.

We’ve removed the ability to reply as we work to make improvements. Learn more here
