The Sunshine Through Golf program, which has been at for five years, connects golfers with special needs with instructors to provide them with an opportunity to learn the sport.
Sponsored by a partnership between Prestwick, the Chicago District Golf Association, , the program has three PGA professionals who instruct the students: Brandon Adair, golf director at Prestwick, and assistant golf pros Scott Jugin and Tim Orbon. LWSRA coaches Ralph Krauss, Lana Dobson and Jerry Halahan also help out.
"We collect golf clubs and bags all yearlong to provide free clubs and bags for the campers," Orbon said. "We give them out to the students who may want them after the five-week camp is finished."
Many of the campers have participated since the program began. Thursday, the first day of camp ended with a putting contest, and Mary Joyce, Matt Reczek and Tony DiGregorio were the winners.
