Phoenix Boys Volleyball Team Gets Royal Parade, Runner-Up at State Finals

The Lincoln-Way North Boys Volleyball team was honored in a hometown parade June 2, celebrating the success of their 2013 season.

The Lincoln-Way North boys volleyball team was honored in a royal hometown parade Sunday. After finishing the 2013 season just behind Downers Grove South High School, the team was lauded for its accomplishments in scores, leadership and school spirit.

The final score to the state championship was 25-18, 25-20.

The team was seated atop a fire truck for all to see as it wound around Summit Hill School District 161, beginning at Arbury Hills School, 19651 Beechnut Drive in Mokena and winding through Frankfort Square.

Fans gathered around the parade route to clap, wave and cheer the team that brought success to L-W North High School. Ultimately, the parade of fire trucks, emergency vehicles and carloads of fans culminated with a presentation at LWN.

After the boys carried in the coveted trophy and placed it in a spot on stage where all could see and share in the victory, a video highlighting the season's best moments was presented.

The boys sat quietly while their individual contributions and team spirit were spotlighted before the fans. Afterward, accolades were bestowed by the coaching staff and others. Retiring Principal Mike Gardner expressed his pride in the boys, not just for the athletic prowess, but also for the positive attitude and respectful demeanor throughout the season.

Gardner said he was complimented on the team's overall behavior and positive interactions numerous times throughout the season. The compliments extended into the championship game. Illinois High School Association officials, administrators from other high school and more made a point to let the LW North's principal know that the Phoenix team stood out for more than their expertise on the floor.

Gardner thanked the boys for such a positive reflection on a school that has only been open for five years.
