Lincoln-Way Swimmers Raise Funds to Fight Sarcoma Cancer

The girls swim teams from L-W West, L-W Central and L-W North performed in relay races in honor of a swimmer from Carleton College who died in 2006 of sarcoma cancer.

Swimmers from Lincoln-Way West, Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way North participated recently in the eighth annual "Hour of Power" Relay for Sarcoma Research and raised over $700 in donations.

The national event hosted by Lincoln-Way West is sponsored by Carleton College Swimming and Diving in honor of former Winnetka swimmer Ted Mullin, who died in 2006 following a battle with sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer. In 2011 over 8,000 athletes from all over the country including local clubs, high school and college swim teams participated in the event.

"We had the honor of hosting Ted's father, Rick Mullin and Dr. John Cunningham, from the University of Chicago. They were very impressed with our girls at Lincoln-Way and enjoyed seeing them work hard, swim fast and have fun, in honor of a great cause," stated Kristen Neuberg, head girls swim coach and science teacher at Lincoln-Way West High School.

The event at Lincoln-Way West has raised in the past three years of over $4,000 for the Ted Mullin Fund. The event was held on Aug. 17. Participants in the event and swimming the relays were girls from the Lincoln-Way West, Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way North swim teams. This is the third year the Lincoln-Way teams have participated in the Hour of Power.

"Our $4,000 plus dollars of donations has gone directly to the University of Chicago for ongoing sarcoma research. Mullin pointed out that New Lenox's Silver Cross Hospital houses the University of Chicago Cancer Center, so our work is directly benefitting research and treatments in our immediate community," noted Neuberg.

The swimmers also heard from Cunningham about sarcoma and its rates of survival compared to other cancers found in both children and adults, and how our funds help research at the University of Chicago, said the coach.
