Lincoln-Way East's Sterling Already Sizzling on Golf Course

Freshman is having a major impact on the Griffins' girls golf team right out of the gate.

There’s no denying that Lincoln-Way East freshman Kelly Sterling can not only play at the high school level but will often be one of the top players on the golf course this fall.

Sterling fired a 5-over-par 76 on Monday in the Marian Catholic Invitational at Coyote Run in Flossmoor. She posted the third-best score in the tournament and helped the Griffins take fourth place.

She was back on the course again on Tuesday and fired a 1-under-par 35 to pace the Griffins past Lincoln-Way West, 169-205, in the Southwest Suburban Red dual meet at the Sanctuary in New Lenox.

The Griffins have a couple of big tournaments on the schedule. They’ll tee off in the Joliet Central Invite today will play in the Andrew Invite on Monday.

L-Way East Boys Golf Season Begins

The Lincoln-Way East boys golf team opened its season early Tuesday morning, making the long journey to Bristol’s Blackberry Oaks Golf Course. The 12-team tournament was played using an adjusted scoring format, and the Griffins finished in ninth place with a 101. Metea Valley won the tournament with a 129.

On Thursday, the Griffins dropped a dual to Lincoln-Way West, 158-154. Matt Stone led the way for East with a 38, followed by Ron Gorny (39), Tyler Kelly (40) and David Lakto (41).

Curtain’s Effort Not Enough

Lincoln-Way North’s Margaret Curtin shot a 46 in a Southwest Suburban crossover against Joliet Township co-op on Wednesday in girls golf action, but the Phoenix came up short, losing 232-217.

L-W North’s Williams is Medalist

Lincoln-Way North’s Matt Williams was the medalist with a 5-over-par 40 on Thursday, but it wasn’t enough for the Phoenix, who fell to Homewood-Flossmoor, 168-175, at Ravisloe Country Club in Homewood.
