This wasn’t how it was supposed to end for . The Griffins, top seeded in the Class 7A football playoffs and 10-0 heading into Friday night’s game in Frankfort, were stopped cold. Two-time defending state champion Wheaton Warrenville South won 7-0 to end East’s season.
The Griffins came out strong in the first quarter with outstanding plays by Blake Anders and Tyler Starke on offense. The defense played an incredible game, stifling the Tigers’ offense for most of the night.
It was a few tough breaks that took the steam out of the Griffins. Blake Winkler’s pass intended for J.J. Robertson was intercepted on the Griffins’ 5-yard line. The offensive line had a hard time protecting quarterback Winkler after the first quarter, giving him little time to complete passes or execute plays.
Still, Griffins fans were ignited in the fourth quarter with less that two minutes on the clock. Things seemed to fall into place with a complete pass to Anders, who dashed out of bounds to stop the clock. A pass to Jay Yancy in the end zone with six seconds left was the last hope, but it was knocked away by two Tiger defenders.
There was no stopping the tears and stares of disbelief on the faces of many on hand. It was a sad ending to what was a memorable season.
