Position breakdown

Infield: Kaley Jendraszak (senior, third baseman) has the mentality of wanting to make the last play when the game’s on the line. She hit .309 with 16 RBI last season. Jorgi Calombaris (sophomore, shortstop), whose nickname is “Pit Bull” because of her unbridled aggressiveness, is switching positions after playing second base last spring. Nikki Jarrell (sophomore) and Lisa Holcomb (senior) will play second and first base, respectively. Not to be overlooked is Aubrey DeGroot (senior, designated player), who hit .317 with two home runs and 14 RBI last season and has proven to be one of the biggest clutch players for the Griffins.

Outfield: Jillian Reid (senior, center fielder) hit  .359 with 18 stolen bases in 2010. “It will say a lot to our outfield to have a three-way varsity starter in Jill Reid to lead them in center field this year,” Meader said. Reid possesses great speed, aggressiveness and leadership skills. Bri Morell (junior, left fielder) brings excellent energy and is a true team player. Carissa Ernat (sophomore) has a strong arm that makes her a dangerous right fielder. “Looking forward to what this young athlete can bring to the table,” Meader said. “With her arm, she will look to throw runners out from right field.”

Pitching staff: Junior Kaycee Hart moves into the No. 1 spot after filling the shoes of three-year starter Caitlin Santefort. Hart’s experience in pressure situations should prove beneficial. Fellow junior Hannah Rosian also will spend time in the circle. Meader said Rosian is the ying to Hart’s yang in that the two are different in all aspects. “But that’s what you need on a pitching staff—diversity,” Meader said.

Catcher: Megan Butler (senior) is a three-year starter who brings an intimidating presence. She clobbered nine homers a season ago while hitting .363 and driving in 38 runs.

Diamond gems

College recruits: Megan Butler (Olivet Nazarene University), Kaley Jendraszak (University of St. Francis), Jillian Reid (Baylor University/looking to walk-on), Aubrey DeGroot (undecided).
