Lincoln-Way Co-Op Gymnastics Team Places 2nd in IHSA State Finals

Senior standout Ajani Cargle places second in the all-around competition and leads the Lincoln-Way Co-Op gymnastics team to a second-place finish in the IHSA state meet Friday in Frankfort.

Ajani Cargle was nearly perfect during his floor exercise routine in the IHSA boys state gymnastics meet Friday night at Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort.

Cargle, the senior leader of the Lincoln-Way co-op team, posted a score of 9.8 en route to a second-place finish in the all-around competition. He added scores of 8.9 on the pommel horse, 9.55 on the still rings, 9.4 in vault, 9.2 on the parallel bars and 9.5 on the horizontal bar.

Cargle finished with a total of 56.350, good for a second-place finish in the all-around. The defending state champ was edged in a tight battle for the all-around crown by Glenbard West freshman sensation Alex Diab.

Diab totaled 56.70, including a 9.7 mark on still rings. Lincoln-Way co-op's Victor Valencia placed 26th in the all-around with a total of 46.5.

With Cargle and Valencia leading the way, Lincoln-Way finished second in the team competition with a total of 157.450 points—but fell 3.35 points shy of claiming its second straight state championship. Wheaton Warrenville South won the team title with a total 160.8.

Individual preliminaries begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Finals are at 6:30 p.m.
