Weringa Paving the Way for L-W North Girls Basketball

Junior guard Ashley Weringa was instrumental in Lincoln-Way North's 51-16 victory over Richards.

Ashley Weringa was nearly unstoppable for the Lincoln-Way North girls basketball team Tuesday night against Richards. Her 14 points were just two shy of Richards' entire total in the Phoenix's 51-16 victory over the Bulldogs in play at the Oak Lawn Holiday Tournament.

"Ashley's been shooting the ball real well for us this year; she's a great leader," Phoenix coach Jim Nair said.

Weringa had five rebounds and two steals as well. Her steals were good enough for a share of the team lead, but she was also key in Lincoln-Way North's strong defensive showing in areas that don't make the stat sheets.

"I think the key was our defense, and they are very good in the post," Weringa said. "We were able to shut them down."

"If we play the same game we did today against (Oak Lawn), we should be OK," she added.

Weringa plans to enter the medical field after she graduates from Lincoln-Way North. She wants to become a nurse or orthopedic surgeon. For now, she'll continue to operate on Phoenix opponents.
