Gimme 5: No Sophomore Jinx for Calombaris

'Pit Bull' softball standout can hit, run and field for Lincoln-Way East.

Jorgi Calombaris may only be a sophomore, but she plays like a seasoned veteran for a Lincoln-Way East softball team that has won its first 10 games.

Calombaris was hitting .296 with five runs scored and four stolen bases in games through April 17.

Defensively, she has made a seamless transition from second base to shortstop this year and helped the Griffins survive a few nail-biters, including three one-run contests. She's handled 27-of-30 chances for a .900 fielding percentage.

Nicknamed “Pit Bull,” the scary thing for the rest of the Southwest Suburban Blue Conference is that Calombaris will be back for two more seasons after this one.

"Jorgi plays an aggressive game of softball, from her warm ups, to her at-bats, to her unbridled effort on the dirt, hence her 'Pit Bull' nickname," Lincoln-Way East coach Katie Meader said. "As a coach, she's a player that makes you feel confidence in every situation she is placed in."
