Gimme 5: Ninth Win for Chemello a Dandy for Griffins
Lincoln-Way East junior Mark Chemello picked up victory No. 9 and his third shutout in the Griffins' sectional semifinal upset of rival Lincoln-Way North.
There was no bigger start in the young career of Lincoln-Way East junior Mark Chemello than last Thursday.
For one, a loss and the season for the Griffins would be over. Secondly, the game was in the sectional semifinals. Third, the opponent was district rival Lincoln-Way North, whose high-powered offense had scored 10 runs at least 24 times this season. The Phoenix had hammered the Griffins 9-3 earlier in the season.
Chemello fired a five-hit shutout to send the Griffins to the Class 4A Sandburg Sectional title. He also shut out Lincoln-Way Central and Joliet Academy this spring.
