Gimme 5: Cargle's Humble and Remarkable

Lincoln-Way East junior Ajani Cargle won three individual state titles and helped Lincoln-Way co-op win its first state championship since 2006. Oh, and he still wants more from his gymnastics career.

Lincoln-Way co-op gymnastics coach Skip Adamson teaches his boys a lot of things. Clearly, modesty is on the list.

Junior Ajani Cargle won the all-around title on Friday night to help Lincoln-Way beat Wheaton co-op for the IHSA boys state gymnastics title.

"It doesn't feel like I thought it would," Cargle said. "I didn't have the great meet I wanted and had some mistakes. I'm proud of my teammates for winning it with me not doing too much."

Not too much, huh?

Cargle had one of the top three scores on Friday in five events. His work included a 9.55 vault, 9.5 floor routine, 9.45 on parallel bars and a 9.1 on both pommel horse and still rings.

While Cargle strives for 10s and wasn't overly thrilled with his production, his contributions were crucial to Lincoln-Way winning its first state title since 2006.

On Saturday, he came back and won a pair of individual titles, sharing top honors on floor exercise with Libertyville's Craig Breckenridge and capturing the high bar outright.

Not looking too far ahead, but Cargle will aim to win all six events next May.
