Frankfort Man Commutes to Job in University Park on Bicycle

Rick Deering, 50, Frankfort, is a committed biker. In good weather he rides his bike to and from his job in University Park.

Bicycling is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors. But for 50-yer-old Rick Deering of Frankfort, it's his mode of transportation to and from his job in University Park.

It's a 13-mile ride one-way, said Deering. A bike riding enthusiast for many years, he'd rather feel the breeze on his face in the morning than get behind the steering wheel of his car.

Patch caught up with Deering on his way home from work May 21 as he pulled into a parking lot in the 2100 block of LaGrange Road. Having hardly worked up a sweat from the 13-mile ride in 80 degree temperatures, he paused to talk about his hobby.

"I'm a commuter," he said. Bicycle races are not necessarily in his purview, but he enjoys the exercise a bike ride offers on a nice day.

"I got into work on my bike over 125 times last year," he said.

Last year Deering logged 5,000 miles on his bike. About 3,500 of those came from his commuting regimen.

Deering is a member of the Folks On Spokes Bicylcle Club, which regularly meets at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month at Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road.
