Adam Gettis is known for giving a little bit extra in the football trenches.

Gettis, a 6-foot-4, 280-pound senior offensive lineman at the University of Iowa and former Lincoln-Way East standout, was recognized for his diligence during the Hawkeyes' annual awards banquet Saturday at the Marriott Coralville Hotel and Conference Center in Coralville, Iowa.

For Gettis, the award followed on the heels of productive season. He was named to the coaches' second All-Big Ten team after starting every game at offensive left guard for the Hawkeyes. He shared the "Heartbeat" honor with teammate Tyler Nielsen.

The Hayden Fry Award is given in honor of Iowa's Hall of Fame coach. Hayden Fry retired after the 1998 season with a 20-year record of 143-89-6. The award goes to players who give "a little extra" at all times.

Gettis' work in the trenches helped the Hawkeyes notch a 7-5 overall record and 4-4 mark in Big Ten play. Iowa faces No. 19 Oklahoma in the Insight Bowl on Dec. 30 at Tempe, Ariz.

Then, Gettis will turn his thoughts to a pro career. He is projected as a fourth- to sixth-round NFL Draft pick. He graduated from Lincoln-Way East in 2007.
