Lincoln-Way East volleyball team to honor teachers at match

Varsity volleyball players at Lincoln-Way East High School want their teachers to know how much they appreciate what they do for them in the classroom.

On Sept. 23, the players will invite their favorite teachers to the game and honor them during a special recognition program before the match.

"Our intent is to recognize our teachers in a special way," said volleyball coach Linda Vivona, who has coined the evening "Each Athlete Salutes a Teacher."

"Teachers spend many hours preparing lessons that are meaningful and fun," she added. "Our girls know that they are student-athletes and that being a student athlete is the first of three program goals. We expect them to maintain a 3.0, turn in work on time and prepare adequately for tests."

Each player has already picked a teacher to recognize on the volleyball court that evening. They plan to honor their favorite teachers by giving each one an apple as they are called to the court during the pre-match introductions.

Visitors will have an opportunity to learn more about the teachers honored that night by stopping by a display case in the school cafeteria. Each volleyball player has posted a photo of herself with her favorite teacher.

"We are hoping to have a big turn-out for Teacher Appreciation Night," said Vivona. "We want our parents and friends to see how much we appreciate the teachers here at East."
