Baseball: Boehm's Blast Ends L-W East's Season

Mount Carmel 9, Lincoln-Way East 7. Griffins rally twice from deficits but a two-run home run from Jeff Boehm in the top of the sixth pushes the Caravan to this weekend's state finals.

Touching All the Bases: Lincoln-Way East fell behind 3-0 to Mount Carmel in Monday night’s Class 4A Crestwood Supersectional, but the Griffins answered with five runs in the second inning to take a 5-3 lead.

The Caravan rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but the Griffins took advantage of a two-out error to take a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the frame.

Mount Carmel drew even at 7-7 in the fifth inning and then took the lead for good when Jeff Boehm turned around an Alec Ornelas fastball and deposited it over the right-field fence at Standard Bank Stadium for a two-run home run and a 9-7 Caravan lead. Winning pitcher Tyler Laurisch got better as the evening wore on, setting down the final nine he faced.

Patch’s MVP: Not many high school hurlers show the resolve to keep battling after surrendering five runs in one inning early, but Laurisch found his slider and curveball in the later innings and kept the Griffins from rallying. He struck out five in the final three innings while pitching the complete-game victory.

Lincoln-Way East’s Leaders: Zach Jones slugged a two-run home run and Jake Hickey had an RBI double.

Quotable I: Lincoln-Way East coach Paul Babcock on it not being the Griffins' night: "Sometimes it doesn't bounce your way. We could've hit rockets all day long and could've been right at them. That's what makes this game great and this game frustrating."

Quotable II: Mount Carmel coach Brian Hurry on overcoming four errors: "We had talked to the kids before the game that we'll face adversity. It's how we respond that counts. Some things didn't go our way, but they were beyond our control. I told the kids to refocus on things we can control."

Team Records: Mount Carmel improved to 32-7. Lincoln-Way East finished at 25-12.

What’s Next: Mount Carmel will play Lyons at 5 p.m. Friday in the Class 4A semifinals in Joliet. Lincoln-Way East's season has concluded.
