Athlete of the Week: Lincoln-Way East’s Makayla Weller Shows Off All-Around Volleyball Skills

Senior co-captain Makayla Weller helps the Griffins win twice during their opening week of action.

Lincoln-Way East senior outside hitter Makayla Weller found herself relaxing on the bench during the second game of the Griffins' girls volleyball victory over Mt. Assisi on Thursday night.

Weller had two kills and five digs in a 25-10 win Game 1. So, East coach Linda Vivona was able to shake up the lineup a bit and the three-year starter and co-captain cheered on her teammates as they rallied for a 26-24 victory to claim the match.

Weller won’t be spending too much time watching though as the Griffins count on her presence on the court.

She had 13 kills and 18 digs in East's season-opening win against Wilmington. She is rewarded for her efforts today as the Patch Athlete of the Week for Frankfort/Mokena.

“She’s grown throughout the years and her confidence has increased,” Vivona said. “She makes those who play around her more confident and relaxed and composed, and she understands her role as a co-captain and three-year starter.”

Weller does so many things well, which she displayed in East's two victories.

“She passes well, she can swing the ball, can block the ball and serves a really nice floater from the baseline,” Vivona said. “She’s a very solid all-around player, which is what you expect from an outside. I expect she’ll put up some very good stats for us this season.”
