Athlete of the Week: Edmonds is L-W North's Everywhere Man

Phoenix's Jeffrey Edmonds pressured the quarterback, recovered a fumble and made big plays on special teams to lead North past Lincoln-Way West on Friday night.

It’s hard not to notice Jeffrey Edmonds on the football field.

“He’s a great kid and a great player,” Phoenix coach George Czart said. “He’s got speed and a desire to get to the ball, he’s a fierce hitter and we expect plays out of him.”

Lincoln-Way West had one final drive to try to take the lead. Facing fourth-and-14 on the Phoenix 42-yard line with less than two minutes remaining, quarterback Kyle Millner dropped back to pass but had little time to find a receiver as Edmonds was hot on his trail. Edmonds forced Millner to hurry his throw, which fell incomplete to the seal the victory for North.

Apparently, Edmonds is making the North vs. West rivalry one he’ll always remember. Last year the Phoenix had four takeaways in a 35-28 victory, which included an interception by Edmonds.

“They thought they could come in here and win it,” he said Friday night. “It was very big to get back on track and get our season rolling with the rough start lately.”

Edmonds not only came up big on defense, but he also was huge on special teams, quickly getting downfield to thwart any big gains on punt returns.

“Special teams are big, especially tonight because of field position and having a hard time scoring,” he said. “I think you saw that for both the offense and defense.”
