Supporters Succeed in Saving JROTC at L-W District 210

The program will be scaled back to two schools—but will still continue in Lincoln-Way District 210, the Board of Education voted Thursday.

Parents and students fighting to keep Lincoln-Way District 210's JROTC program can breathe a sigh of relief. The program will continue in the district—but with cuts.

The district's Board of Education voted unanimously to keep the program, but downsize it from four to two schools, ABC7 reports. JROTC was supposed to be phased out during the next three years, but the supporters wouldn't let it go without a fight. A standing-room-only crowd packed a school board meeting two weeks ago, as parents, veterans and JROTC cadets pleaded for the Junior ROTC program's survival.

The public's outcry led the board to take another look—"It was worth reconsidering," said President Arvid Johnson.

"I'm just so emotional and happy that they did this because ROTC has given me a chance to be a leader, just be an individual," Cadet Samantha Williams told ABC7.

Limiting the program to two schools will ultimately save roughly $250,000 next year, according to the report. Students from all four schools will be able to participate, but exercises will take place at Central and North only.
