L-W East Volleyball Team to Spotlight Breast Cancer Awareness

"Volley for the Cure" will honor cancer fighters and survivors and raise funds for Susan G. Komen.

The Lincoln-Way East High School girls volleyball team will hit the courts for a worthy cause this Thursday at the fifth annual Volley for the Cure breast cancer awareness match.

“Volley for the Cure is a nationwide effort to honor and celebrate the heroic fight against breast cancer,” said head girls volleyball coach Linda Vivona in a press release from Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210. “We hope the community will join us.”

Breast cancer survivors and individuals currently battling breast cancer are invited to be recognized and receive a flower from the players between matches.

Spectators are also welcome to sign a pink banner if they are breast cancer survivors, fighters or have lost someone to breast cancer.

The volleyball team will play in pink jerseys and will sell cookies, brownies and T-shirts to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

Each year, the team offers a different commemorative T-shirt. This year’s shirt reads “Wild About Pink? You Think.” and costs $10.

Volley for the Cure will begin at 5:45 p.m. in the main gym at Lincoln-Way East.

Anyone interested in participating in the recognition of breast cancer fighters and survivors should contact Vivona at lvivona@lw210.org or 815-464-4025 with their name and phone number, and should wear pink to the event.
