Hickory Creek Middle School Spelling Champ Takes on County's Best

Riley Masterson competes Thursday in the Will County Spelling Bee.

An eighth-grader at Hickory Creek Middle School in Frankfort could be headed to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., if she emerges victorious at Thursday's Will County Spelling Bee.

Riley Masterson learned the alphabet at 1 year of age and began reading at 3, her dad, Brian Masterson, told reporter Frank Vaisvilas.

“She’s one of those people who reads for fun,” he said. “She even reads while she’s walking and doesn’t want to put down the book.”
