An eighth-grader at Hickory Creek Middle School in Frankfort could be headed to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., if she emerges victorious at Thursday's Will County Spelling Bee.

Riley Masterson learned the alphabet at 1 year of age and began reading at 3, her dad, Brian Masterson, told reporter Frank Vaisvilas.

“She’s one of those people who reads for fun,” he said. “She even reads while she’s walking and doesn’t want to put down the book.”

The Hickory Creek Middle School champ will compete against 50 of the top spellers in Will County. The National Spelling Bee takes place in May and airs on ESPN.
