15,000 Votes, Results Are In: Lincoln-Way East Football Standout Bayer Takes Patch Athlete of Week Honors

Lincoln-Way East's Kevin Bayer garnered 52 percent of the votes in a fan poll to pick the Patch Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Oct. 2.

More than 15,000 votes were cast in balloting to pick the Patch Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 2. Lincoln-Way East football standout Kevin Bayer emerged as the poll winner, just as he and the Griffins (7-0) have emerged winners each time they have set foot on the playing field.

Bayer, a senior defensive end and 250-pound bulldozer of a running back, garnerd 52 percent of the votes. He edged Sandburg junior volleyball standout Dakota Hampton and Brother Rice senior football linebacker Cody Stull. Hampton netted 43 percent of the votes and Stull finished with 5 percent.

Bayer scored on a 13-yard run with 5:09 remaining in Lincoln-Way East's 20-14 victory over Bolingbrook on Sept. 30. The two met at the time in battle for sole possession of first place in the Southwest Suburban Blue.

Hampton was nominated after racking up 13 kills in Sandburg's 13-25, 27-25, 25-23 victory over Marist in the Gold Division consolation match at the Asics Challenge. Stull had two interceptions in Brother Rice's 38-31 victory over Providence, including one to end the game in the second overtime.
