FHBA to Host Annual Christkindl and Cookie Walk Weekend December 7-8

Drawing on Frankfort's German heritage, the Frankfort Historic Business Association will host the 28th annual Christkindl celebration on December 7-8, 2013, from 12-4 p.m. The 9th annual Cookie Walk will also take place during that time frame.

"Frankfort has German roots and it's important that we remember these things," said Pickwick Society Tearoom owner Cindy Vassell, who has been a part of the cookie walk for the past eight years and loves that St. Nicholas, Germany's version of Santa Claus, is a part of the weekend event.

"He should be here. He's part of Frankfort's Christkindl tradition," she shared.

St. Nicholas does spend the weekend in Frankfort visiting with families throughout the downtown area. In keeping with his legend, St. Nicholas passes out sweets (gingerbread cookies) to nice little children but switches (sticks) to naughty ones. St. Nicholas will also be on hand for a breakfast in his honor on Saturday, December 7, at 10:45 a.m. at Smokey Barque, 20 W. Kansas Street (tickets required).

As Saturday draws to a close, St. Nicholas will lead the traditional children’s lantern parade (lanterns provided) from the Frankfort Area Historical Society at 4:45 p.m. And he’ll be back downtown on Sunday, December 8, when live reindeer and elves make their first appearance at Christkindl from 12-3 p.m. Also new for 2013, 104.3 FM K-HiTS will broadcast live from the event from 12:30-2:30 p.m., and Home Depot will sponsor a craft project on Sunday from 12-4 p.m.

In addition, the downtown will be packed with cookie walkers who travel in and out of over 20 participating stores collecting individually wrapped cookies. This is a ticketed activity, and it has sold out the past several years. Tickets are $10 each in advance and include 20+ cookies and unlimited rides on the horse-drawn wagon and Holly Jolly Trolley.  If the event is not sold out, Cookie Walk tickets will be sold at check in on the main floor of the Trolley Barn, 11 S. White Street, for $12 each on December 7 and 8, beginning at 12 p.m.

Cookie Walk tickets are currently being sold at This & That Gifts, Lil’ Surprises, Yoga for You, Pickwick Society Tearoom, Glory Bee and Eclectic Attic. Smokey Barque has tickets for Breakfast with St. Nicholas. Cash or check only. All tickets can also be purchased online by credit card at http://frankfortcookiewalk13.eventbrite.com.
