Wellness Fair Promotes Good Health

Special event offers village residents free health screenings and educational seminars.

For eight years, the has worked with the to host an annual Wellness Fair in early February, which coincides with American Heart Month.

"We experienced a spike in attendance last year (more than 250 attendees)," said Mary Canino, Frankfort's community relations manager. "We are anticipating more this year.

"The response has been excellent as everyone is looking to be healthy and receive information quickly," she added.

The fair has grown in size with St. James Hospital providing trained professionals who offer educational clases and demonstrations, along with free health screenings and preventive care information. New this year will be 30-minute seminars on lap band weight loss, carpal tunnel surgery, osteoporosis and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Three Cooking for a Healthy Lifestyle demonstrations will be at the Founders Center's kitchen with registered dietician Jaqui Conter.

For those nervous about dealing with doctors, Canino describes the fair as having an informal atmosphere. Visitors can browse the information tables, take advantage of the free screenings or drop in to one or more classes at their convenience. Screening results are available within 20 minutes and given out with a recommendation to follow up with a physician if needed, Canino said.

With heart disease the leading cause of death for Americans claiming a life a minute, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Wellness Fair offers residents an easy opportunity to get educated on a wealth of health-related topics and start  living healthier in 2011.
